Tim Royappa1 Stars Out Of 5Modern language, but abridgedApril 2, 2012Tim RoyappaThis version of the beloved Matthew Henry Commentary is an updated version in contemporary English. Be warned, however, that THIS VERSION IS ABRIDGED! All the main points in the original seem to be present here; however, some of Matthew Henry's expansive comments and pious exclamations that make this work as much a devotional as a commentary have been edited out. Here is just one example, from Gen. 1:1-2.
The Son of God, the eternal Word and Wisdom of the Father, was with him when he made the world (Prov. 8:30), nay, we are often told that the world was made by him, and nothing made without him, Jn. 1:3, 10; Eph. 3:9; Col. 1:16; Heb. 1:2. O what high thoughts should this form in our minds of that great God whom we draw nigh to in religious worship, and that great Mediator in whose name we draw nigh!
We are often told that the world was made by the Son, and nothing was made without him (Jn 1:3, 10; Eph 3:9; Col 1:16; Heb 1:2)
So ... if you can manage the old English, get the original version, by all means - Matthew Henry's extended musings on God and His word are very helpful and spiritually encouraging. But if you have to have a modern language edition, this will have to do.
