The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship.
Donald A. Hagner is the George Eldon Ladd Professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, where he has taught for nearly thirty years. He is a graduate of Fuller, where he studied with Everett Harrison and George Ladd, and of Manchester University, where he studied with F. F. Bruce. Among his writings are commentaries on Hebrews and Matthew.
RICHARD HOLTClovis, NMAge: 45-54Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5Scholarly and DetailedSeptember 22, 2012RICHARD HOLTClovis, NMAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4This is a very detailed and scholarly treatment of the Gospel of Matthew. Hagner writes from a moderately conservative Evangelical perspective. The comments on the Greek words and phrases are extensive and helpful. The bibliographies are fairly exhaustive. Those interested in textual criticism will appreciate Hagner's efforts in that area. There are other commentaries that focus more deeply on theological concerns. Also, due to the intent of the series, practical applications are few and far between. But this is a very helpful book for advanced seminarians and scholars.
