After trying Saxon (ugh) - overcomplicated, completedly reliant on parent and manipulatives, no worktext, black and white, blah. Singapore - which was just too easy for K or too hard for the 1A, it did have a colorful oral textbook but a black and white workbook (?). We even tried just using workbooks from teacher centers. Nothing. Finally, on a fluke, I came across a great deal on the BJU K5 teachers manual, so I thought okay I'll try it and I bought the worktext here to go with it and WOW a homerun! We really love this. I know everyone says it gets expensive because you need to buy everything but you do not need to buy all the extras unless you have the money and/or you just really want to. BJU is really great about giving you a lot of great charts, visuals, resources, etc. in the back of the teacher manual and/or on the CD-rom. The curriculum is as complex or as simple as you choose to make it (remember that!) Also, get creative with manipulatives folks. We have never bought a "manipulatives kit" for any of the math programs (new or used) Pssst - just between you and me you could even use real money for the money section. Plus if you ever got desperate for money you would always know where to find some - lol. We use all kinds of things and I even came across someone who suggested leggo blocks for the cube links. I thought that was brilliant! We bought a cheap abacus and we love that. The BJU K5 Math is really wonderful so please do not let these other things deter you. It is colorful, easy to understand and follow, fun and as I said as simple or as complex as you choose to make it. We have been so pleased we have decided to try BJU for Reading/LA, Math and History next year!
Math is my son's favorite subject thanks to this wonderful and colorful program. He has easily learned the concepts in this curriculum and enjoyed it every step of the way. I feel my kindergartner is getting an excellent education with BJU curriculum!
