Publisher's Description

Basic to learning New Testament Greek is acquiring an adequate vocabulary. The traditional methods used for vocabulary building are based on memorization of frequency lists or cognate groups. Mark Wilson introduces Greek students to a method widely used today in general language learning--semantic domains, or categories. Wilson arranges the Greek words in ninety-three categories, including geographical objects and features, artifacts, body parts, people, linear movement, kinship, attitudes and emotions, communication, time, and moral and ethical qualities. He also includes frequency counts for every Greek word.

If you are learning to read the Bible in Koine Greek and are held back by a limited vocabulary, this book can be a great help. Some prefer to learn vocabulary in order of frequency of use. In my mind, that leaves me with a jumble of words that is just hard to memorize. Some prefer to learn cognates first. That is picking the low-hanging fruit, but not getting much value. Most cognates are either rarely used or easily guessed. Organizing words by semantic domains (topics, or subject matter) lets you see similar words together and often see helpful patterns. Only problem with this book is there is no index. It is very difficult to look up a word and find synonyms, antonyms, roots, compounds, etc. but it beats thumbing your lexicon for every word that means man, woman, person, son, father, etc.
