My son currently uses this dvd, I purchased this a long with the Saxon workbooks . I used to be an elementary teacher. My son will be entering 3rd grade soon at a public. He is getting so far ahead in math, that it is frustrating for me. I can probably teach some of it to him, but the dvd's make it so much easier and better. I also like that he teaches problems that aren't in the Saxon text, this gives my son more and different problems to work on. The lessons are generally short 6-10 minutes. Most of them are about 6 minutes.

I use the following schedule for my son and continue to use it even after the school year has started.

    1. he does mental math in saxon book with me

    2. he reads (skims) the lesson in the book

    3. then he watches the dvd

    4. does the problems, I've selected, in the workbook

    5. gives me the problems to check

The school my children attend uses MAPS testing. This is a progressive test, the computer stops when the child can't do anymore problems. My children were tested 3 times during the school year. The highest you can get is 99%. Both boys got 99% for all three testing periods.

I've been using Saxon Math with both boys starting in 1st grade.

My regret is that they didn't make a Saxon 6/5 dvd set like this one. I would have liked to use that one too. I have one more son on Saxon 3 right now. So please make a 6/5 set, so I can buy it for him.
