Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute, a female divinity figure, a church leader, or all of those? Biblical references to her are tantalizingly brief, but we do know that she was the first person to whom the risen Christ appearedand the one commissioned to tell others the good news, earning her the ancient honorific, "Apostle to the Apostles."
Today, Mary continues to spark controversy, curiosity, and veneration. In a vivid re-creation of Mary Magdalene's life story, Margaret George convincingly captures this renowned woman's voice as she moves from girlhood to womanhood, becomes part of the circle of disciples, and comes to grips with the divine.
While grounded in biblical scholarship and secular research, Mary, Called Magdalene ultimately transcends both history and fiction to become a "diary of a soul."

VioletUSAGender: female2 Stars Out Of 5Nothing NewMay 24, 2011VioletUSAGender: femaleWhile this book was an OK read I had expected and hoped to find some material outside of the mainstream KJV texts about Mary Magdalene. There really was nothing new here, it's quite a pedestrian take on the life and times of people in the 1st century BCE and personally, a yawn.
Fran Cono5 Stars Out Of 5May 14, 2009Fran ConoHow many of us have yearned to be "there" to walk beside the others in the time of Jesus?Would you like to join me for that trip to the past and live those wonderous and ponderous moments we have read in the Bible or heard in our Scripture classes?..then this book is a must for you..one can feel the winds of Jeruselem..the dust in our sandals as we walk together with those who loved, hoped and even betrayed Our Lord..Join Mary in a way you can "live" with her, through her life and the relevance to Scripture..This is an amazing experience..I have recommended this account of" Mary.." to all my woman friends , to finally understand historically what circumstances could have brought the Magdala woman to be labled "Prostitute"....excellent reading both scriptural and historically enlightening.
Ginger5 Stars Out Of 5September 2, 2007GingerWhen I started reading this book I was a little concerned that I would stumble upon stuff that contradicted the Bible. However, I was pleased to see that there was nothing offensive in this book or anything that contradicts the Bible. I actually think people who are not believers may come to be after reading this book. Thank you Margaret Geaorge! For those who are already believers, it will deepen your belief. The author tackles many issues that we Christians face. She touches on leagalism, faith by works, the cost of being a Christian and what does real christian love look like. Mary's one brother is very strict in keeping the Law, while her other brother is more liberal in his beliefs. Mary's own family is very strict with keeping the law, to the degree that they believe they are better than everyone else. Sound like any Christians you know? The whole book just points to the fact that we all need Christ's Grace and Mercy. Not one of us is good enough to earn our way in to heaven. The book also makes it plain that Christ died for all men and women, and that Jesus just wants us to Love one another. Which means we need to accept people where they are in their spiritual journey. God loves us all equally. The author brilliantly ties the Gospel story into a narrative form that just makes it so clear and easy to undertand. I love the way Mary struggles with wanting to be the favorite or special disciple. It's human to want to be favored. I especially enjoyed what happened after the Pentecost. The way the book unfolds the early church and how it developed. The issues that were faced and questions of how and where to worship. It was all very interesting and makes me want for find out more about church history. There is just so much in this book to talk about. It would make a great read for any Christian Book Club. I highly recommend it to all.
Emily5 Stars Out Of 5February 12, 2004EmilyThis is such an incredible book. It starts off kind of slowly, but it gives you an understanding of what life was like back then. You get a whole new perspective on the Bible. My mom is currently reading it, and many other women in our church are interested in it as well. Don't let the length dishearten you--it is too amazing to pass up.
Karen K. Wright5 Stars Out Of 5September 4, 2003Karen K. WrightI have read this book twice from the library and intend to add it to my personal collection. In the context of the times of Jesus and the ways of the people this is an awesome and beautiful explanation of who and what Mary Magdalene. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the main character, the times of Jesus and the ways of Christian and Jew alike. This is a book you will have difficulty putting down until the last page is read and Mary's life is spread out for you to wonder at.
