Publisher's Description

Martin Luther taught that a Christian is simultaneously saint and sinner. Thus Luther would be the first to admit that he was not a perfect man. Luther handled most issues with an attitude of "my way or the highway." But Christians the world over are greatly indebted to Martin Luther. Besides championing justification by faith and reforming the church, he feverishly worked to get the Bible into the language of everyday people, was instrumental in establishing universal public education for children, and was an advocate for the priesthood of all believers. This colorful man truly is one of the great heroes of the church. As you work through Drew Blankman's Christian Classics Bible Study based on Luther's thought and teaching, you'll have the opportunity to grapple with Scripture and learn how God might use you, "warts and all," to further his kingdom.

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am a graduate of Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, Texas. I am an associate editor at InterVarsity Press. Previously I worked for CBD, served on the staffs of four churches and taught at a Christian college.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Even though I am not a Lutheran, I love much of Luther's theology. My motivation in writing this study guide was to (1) expose people to some of Luther's writings, 2) show how his theology is firmly based on Scripture, and (3) create a tool through which God might change people's lives.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope that those who do the six studies would learn, as Luther did, to depend not on themselves for salvation but on God's promise and grace found in Jesus Christ. I hope that they will think long and hard about the place of the law in the Christian life. Finally, I hope that they will be stimulated to read more of Luther.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Who are my influences? That's hard to answer. Luther is obviously one. My wife, Candie, is another. I've been influenced by many authors, professors, friends and family members from diverse backgrounds, and all of them have influenced me one way or another. That said, my chief influences have been theologically orthodox Protestants.
