Protestants of all stripes have long read at least a few of Martin Luther's works, but 21st-century readers need guidance and encouragement. Stephen Nichols's Martin Luther provides both. After an exciting overview of Luther's life and theology, Nichols orients the reader to some of the Reformer's major works: The Bondage of the Will, The Three Treaties, The Small Catechism, and On the Councils and the Church. Luther's ethical writings, "table talk," hymns, and sermons also receive due attention. "A Select Guide to Books by and about Luther" concludes this volume, which displays more than 20 illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

How do you do a book on everything from training of children to hymns to preaching topolitical conflict—and have it always full and running over with the glorious gospel, which Luther found again for the whole Christian world? Well, Nichols has done it.
For over half a century Roland Bainton’s Here I Stand has been the best popular introduction to Luther. Stephen Nichols’s engaging volume is in many ways better than Bainton,s for this purpose. It deserves to be widely read, and as an unashamed Luther-lover I hope it will be.
Since Luther published a printed work about every two weeks of his adult life, there is a lot of ground to cover. But Nichols knows the terrain well and opens up its treasures with a deft touch.
A marvelous mixture of biography, history, theology, and anecdote. If you don’t feel the heartbeat of the Reformation in these pages, check your pulse!
Those who know nothing of Luther will benefit greatly from such a readable introduction, while those more familiar with him will find Nichol’s enthusiasm infectious.

I have enjoyed reading this book. I haven't finished it yet. I'm on chapter 11 and the book has 12 chapters. This book is easy to read. It's a good introduction to Martin Luther for those who know little or nothing about him. I think he was a great man of faith especially since he discovered from the Bible that justification is by faith alone in God's grace. Unfortunately it has been said that Martin Luther was anti-semitic due to some statements he made against the Jews. Other than that I think that he was a great man and very instrumental in the Protestant Reformation. I look forward to reading other books about, or by, Mr. Luther. Yours truly, Raul.
