Editorial Reviews

In the second book of the Price of Privilege series, Dotta has brought forth the complicated world of high society England and makes it understandable to readers. Her characters are charming, but she throws in a few scoundrels to even things out.

SUMMARY: Julia Elliston looks at London as the city of shadows. Her life is slowly coming apart due to scandals, most of which are not by her hand. She learns she is the daughter of Lord Roy Pierson, an influential man in England, and he uses her as his pawn to bring down Chance Macy, who appears to have married Julia some time ago. Julia suddenly finds herself thrust into society as the Emerald Heiress. There is one man she hopes she can trust to help her outwit both Lord Pierson and Macy, so she can be in control of her own life.

I'm not entirely sure what to think of this book. You definitely need to read the first book to fully understand what happens in this book. I found Julia a little too wrapped up in herself. By all appearances, Lord Dalry had gone through some very tough things in life as well and had used the trials to refine him and make him a man of compassion and grace. Julia seems to be using the tough things in her life to let her grow bitter and self-absorbed. She yearns for the approval of her father, Lord Pierson, but yet doesn't really seem to make much of an effort to perform according to his wishes. She mourned the loss of her true love, Edward, and in the end was able to marry him, but I still wonder if her character wouldn't have been much improved had she simply submitted to the culture of the day and allowed herself to be married to Lord Dalry who truly loved her and was very protective of her and good for her as well. The story was well-written and interesting and definitely kept my attention to see how it was going to end. I will also be on the look out for the final book in the series to see how the story ends.

Mark of Distinction is the second book in the Price of Privilege trilogy. I cannot say enough about how much I love this series! I wish I could put my finger on what makes a book excellent, but this one has whatever that it is. The characters are well-developed, believable and intriguing. There is a great amount of tension, and it is absolutely unpredictable. I still dont know how this series will eventually end! I liked how this one was written retrospectively by the main character, Julia, reminiscing in her old age about these events.

Many of my critiques in reading books labelled Christian fiction is the lack of Christianity. Other reviewers, I note, complain that the religion aspect of some books is too overbearing and blatant, which can frequently be true. I think Ms. Dotta has achieved a good balance, as she has very gently brought Julia to a knowledge of God.

The only thing I hate about this series is the fact that I started it before it was complete. The last installment is not due until Spring of 2015. It shall be a long wait, but an opportunity to work on developing some patience.

Found the beginning of this book to remind me very much of the first book in the series. too many characters to keep track of - especially men - and to much secularness for my tastes. If I am going to read christian books then I want them to have more Christianity in them!

I really enjoyed this book. Jessica Dotta provides just enough hints as to what is coming up next in the story to make you want to read more, but not enough to really figure out what is going to happen next. This is definitely one of my favorites.

    Mark of Distinction

    The Price of Privilege #2

    By Jessica Dotta

Julia Elliston has escaped. At least for the moment. But she has been caught in a web of deceit from which she never emerge. In Born of Persuasion Julia had seemingly escaped from the designs of her guardian, until she found herself forced into a marriage she didn't want to a Mr. Chance Macy. To Julia's surprise and horror she was the unwitting pawn in a game of chess between Mr. Macy and Lord Pierson, the father she never knew of. With the help of Edward Auburn Julia escaped Mr. Macy and made her way to Maplecroft, her father's home.

But now she is at the mercy of her father's schemes to destroy Mr. Macy and to secure political future of Lord Issac Dalry. Julia is left with little choice in what her life has become as Lord Pierson manipulates the lives of those around him.

Mark of Distinction is an intriguing book as one tries to figure out what exactly who is doing what and what their ultimate goal is. One feels sorry for Julia, though some of her problems are of her own making. I think Issac is the one person empathize the most with. He too is at the beck-and-call of Lord Pierson. But he truly cares about Julia and her feelings.

This is a book that I don't think you could read without first reading the previous book. You need to read Born of Persuasion to fully grasp the nuances of the characters and their relationships. I can't wait to read book 3 to find out what happens. Does Julia have a happy ending? Or will she bow to her father's demands?

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher Tyndale through The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.
