Product Description

Mindful of the great importance of the proper indoctrination of the young people of the church, Louis Berkhof wrote this comprehensive yet concise introduction to the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith from a Reformed perspective. Reprinted in 1998 this text is ideally suited as a textbook for high school and college classes, for Bible classes, and study groups. From a Reformed perspective, Berkhof summarizes the body of church doctrine, beginning with the doctrines of Scripture and proceeding through statements on anthropology, Christology, soteriology, and eschatology. Conveying profound theological exposition with exceptionally clear and simple language, this book is ideally suited as a textbook for high school and college classes, for Bible classes, study groups, and for the interested general reader. Study questions and suggestions for further reading follow each chapter, and the organization of the text in outline form is highly conductive to quick reference and review.

Louis Berkhofs Manual of Christian Doctrine is written from a Reformed theology perspective. The book is in outline form and Berkhof presents each doctrine in a clear and concise manner. At the end of each chapter there are review questions for further study along with references for further study. He frequently shows the errors of Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Arminian theology. On some of the more controversial doctrines he states the common objections made by some and then gives a Biblical and reasoned answer to those objections. I found the discussion on the Doctrine of the Application of the Work of Redemption, which consists of calling, regeneration, conversion, faith, justification, sanctification and perseverance to be excellent. There are a couple of things that I disagree with in Berkhofs theology and one of them is infant baptism and the other is his amillennial position in eschatology, but these in no way stopped me from reading the book numerous times since 1987. I dont remember how I came to buy this book in particular, but it was my introduction to doctrine and it has shaped my theology ever since. I highly recommend this book.

This is an outstanding manual and a very quick read! In it, Berkhof discusses all the essential teachings of historic Christianity-which happen to be Calvinistic. Berkhofs outlines are clear as crystal, and his discussions are incredibly interesting and insightful, which is a pleasant surprise considering he was writing at the beginning of the twentieth century. This manual is so good I use it as a daily devotional. If youre interested at all in theology-begin here! You wont be sorry. Buy this book; find a quiet place to sit and read it, and youll be amazed at what youll come away with. Its an absolutely outstanding purchase.
