In a world where five out of ten marriages end in divorce, is it wishful thinking to believe a couple can be truly, happily, romantically committed "until death do us part"? In Making "I Do" Last a Lifetime, Clarie Cloninger examines the traditional vows and what those words mean in the daily grind and unexpected difficulties of life.
The Promise of Love for a Lifetime
God alone knows fully the hopes and dreams that nestle within the hearts of two souls who promise to honor and cherish one another “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do us part.” And He also knows that only a firm commitment to those vows will fulfill their dreams for a lifetime of love.
In this engaging book, author Claire Cloninger reflects on the promises a couple makes on their wedding day and explores what those words really mean when it comes to the daily grind and unanticipated difficulties of life. Along the way, she shares the inspiring stories of numerous real-life couples whose commitment to those vows has bound them together through staggering challenges and drawn them toward a love that grows deeper with each passing year.
With a refreshing blend of wisdom and humor, Making “I Do” Last a Lifetime will show you how to nurture your own romance and keep the passion burning all the way to forever.
Claire Cloninger is an award-winning lyricist, inspirational speaker, and author of numerous books. A six-time Dove Award—winner, her songs have been widely recorded by such artists as Amy Grant and Sandi Patty. Claire and Robert, her husband of more than 40 years, make their home in the Gulf Coast area of Alabama. They have two married sons and six grandchildren.
In the ten chapters of this book, Claire Cloninger has taken the traditional marriage vows from "I Do" to "Till Death Do Us Part" and explained them through examples from her own marriage of over 40 years and from the experiences of others. In the first chapter, "I Do, " she lists nine ways to "fight fair" or "the plan for creative conflict."(pp.16,17)
Cloninger begins each chapter with a pertinent quote from a famous person and a scripture passage, making the reader more aware of what is to come. For example, David Wilkerson is quoted for chapter two's "Love and Comfort" with "Love is not only something you feel. It's something you do."(p. 21)
It is noteworthy that the author is a sought after Christian communicator, award winning lyricist, and a popular writer. Her style is unique, and the reader is left with a sense that Claire Cloninger can be believed and that she practices that which she encourages others to follow.
This book is definitely more than a nice suggestion for engaged couples, newlyweds, middle weds and older weds, since there is much to be gleaned for all stages of marriage, from wedding day to the end of life with the one He has given us.
Cloninger emphasizes the word "commitment," not only to the marriage partner, but most importantly, to the One Who has brought each couple together--thus making "I Do" last for the lifetime that He intended. Sharon Rideout, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
“I don’t know if you’ve ever wanted to curl up in the middle of a good book and wrap your arms around its neck, but that’s what I wanted to do as I read Claire Cloninger’s Making “I Do” Last a Lifetime. With wisdom and warmth, Claire gives us the principles and the perspectives that will keep us committed to marital love week after week. My husband and I believe this book should be given to every newlywed couple on their wedding day . . . they’ll be blessed by it for years to come.”
