DKEANDallas, TXAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5What I was looking for at the timeJuly 27, 2015DKEANDallas, TXAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I used this curriculum with my 2nd, 3rd, & 5th grader. I wanted something basic enough that my younger ones wouldn't be bored, but strong enough to introduce my 5th grader to some terminology. I wanted a short amount of reading with more emphasis on projects / experiments to explore & understand the concepts. I also wanted a variety for the year & not just one topic. So, I did not purchase this in a full set, but purchased "Our Weather & Water, The Planet Earth, & Machines & Motion" to mix things up throughout the year. I'm glad I did that because the different books were more interesting to different children. I had our best year in science yet & changed a child who hated science to a child who couldn't wait to do another chapter! This particular book was one of the favorites. After the full year, my children probably can't remember all of the vocabulary presented. However, when they hear those terms, it sparks a memory in them. They will frequently ask things like, "Is that the one where the tennis ball stopped?" I want my kids to explore science at this age to prepare them for high school levels where memorization of the terminology will become more important. I believe this book did a wonderful job of just that! FYI - The instructor guide is not necessary to explain the experiments, but it does have a supply list for each lesson & the questions & answers at the end of each chapter. I personally don't quiz or test my children on science at this age, but those are available on the cd included with the teacher's guide. I will be using the God's Design Science books again for this year.
Daixin Yin2 Stars Out Of 5Mile wide but inch deepOctober 3, 2012Daixin YinQuality: 2Value: 2Meets Expectations: 1Our homeschool science co-op (grade 3 to 6) has been using this book. I appreciate the Christian perspective, but am very disappointed at the book as a science curriculum.
Yes, like the other reviewer Ladybee says, it introduces lots of terminologies. The problem is that it rarely explains any concept behind the terminologies sufficiently and clearly; the book jumbles up all those abstract terms together, often in a not so orderly sequence. Personally, I don't think that this is a good way to lay foundations for further higher level studies of science.
For example, lesson 5 is about force. In less than 3 pages, the following terms are introduced: force, tension, tensile strength, buoyancy, net force, and Hooke's law. Inevitably, each concept is only touched upon very superficially.
I was also surprised that inertia is not mentioned at all in a book about mechanical forces and machines.
LadybeeEverett, WAAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent multi-level productJanuary 18, 2011LadybeeEverett, WAAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4I don't know what Darcie is talking about. This curriculum is excellent preparation for high school science. It introduces the terminology that is used in higher level science classes so they will be familiar with it when they get there. It has something for every level from early elementary to challenging problems for the 8th-grader. My science-oriented 6th grader thinks these are interesting and fun and my 8th-grader that doesn't care for science says the language used makes concepts easy to understand. The lessons are short and activities are pretty easy to do.
Darcie1 Stars Out Of 5June 18, 2009DarcieThe idea behind this series is wonderful; unfortunately, the execution fails miserably. The revised version while tremendously better than the original is still a complete waste of money. The depth is about right for a 1st - 3rd grade level. The experiments, and that term is used very loosely with these books are usually cheesy, even to kids. The work that it would take to adapt these books to use for a child above the 3rd grade would be tremendous and the end result would be that you maybe used the table of contents as an outline. Even though the depth is appropriate for around the 1st - 3rd grade level the interest and fun really isnt there. While these books are written from a Christian perspective even that isnt done as well as it could or should be. Please dont waste your money these. For children in 4th - 8th grade there is a wonderful series that includes Exploring the World of Physics, Exploring the World of Biology, and others. These are wonderful, interesting, factual, Christian science books. Bob Jones and Apologetics are also excellent choices for all grade levels.
