Product Description

This is an important book that will significantly strengthen our understanding of Nazi Germany.
from the foreword

For decades, Lutherans have been accused of a passivistic response to Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. In this careful analysis of original documents and the personal reflections of those involved in the church struggle under Hitler, Green seeks to set history straight. He identifies how Confessional Lutherans faced Nazi threats and survived to uphold the faith of Luther in the country of his birth. Green addresses both the successful statements against Hitler's regime, such as the Bethel Confession, and the divisive documents, such as the Barmen Declaration, that sundered any hope of a coordinated Lutheran, and indeed Christian, resistance to the Nazis. Readers also will discover the stories of courageous church leaders who prevented the Nazis from absorbing Lutheran Churches into the Reich Church.

About the cover: Adolf Hitler was a master of propoganda. He carefully arranged photo opportunities that would feed the need of the German people to see the Fuhrer as "one of them." In this image, the photographer captured the supposed "heretic" leaving a church in Wilhelmshaven. The presence of the cross over Hitler's bowed head became an essential part of the propoganda to promote Hitler as sympathetic to the Christian faith.

Lowell C. Green is adjunct professor of history at State University of New York at Buffalo.

    Rev. Denis C. Gray
Lowell C. Green is an author with the rare gift of of communicating what is sometimes complex or obscure clearly and interestingly. It has been my privilege to attend lectures given by Dr. Green as well as to have read his other works of historical theology.Lutherans Against Hitler, is the latest major contribution to finally getting it right where it concerns the opposition of Lutherans to Hitler and his gang. Although Lutherans Against Hitler is well documented and thorough, it is so well written that Green's deep probes and careful analysis are never boring or ponderous in the telling and the reader is encouraged to accompany Green in his search for the facts in their contexts.Lutherans are shown "warts and all" in both their political and theological contexts. No Lutheran 'plaster saints" are proferred but instead, a legacy of authentic heroism is uncovered.VDMA/ The Word of God abides forever.

This may be true, and I am not to condemn, but Luther himself spoke about the murder, and execution of Jews, and thus, further reinforced, and influenced Hitlers holocaust. I'm hard pressed to understand how a church surnamed after an anti-Semite should expect people to believe that they're a friend to the Jews as much as I'm hard pressed to see how slave owners would expect people to believe them to be the liberators of early African-American ancestry. It's in the name. It's all in the name.
