I am by no means Lutheren, but this movie was awesome. We all owe so much to this man who stood up for God and spoke the truth. Because of him, I can practice Christianity that is not linked to the Pope. God bless this man and the people who made this movie. It was better than when I studied him in college.

This movie was so powerful, that I swallowed the money and saw it three times at the theaters when it first hit the big screen. I HAVE read a lot of history with Martin Luther, and believe the movie did it justice. Some minor liberties may have been taken, as with any movie, but it didn't take away from the facts. Some do not like the violence in the film, but to ignore the violence would be to ignore history. I guess these same people would object to showing Jesus beaten and hanging on a cross. I highly encourage everyone to see this movie.

I remember watching the old black and white movie Luther and loved it immensely. Years later I noticed this remake and got it.
Wow is all I can say. True that there is some anger towards God in some parts, but what we must remember is this was a movie not made for our entertainment, but actual history. And the reformation was extremely turbulent times physically, emotionally and especially spiritually with the iron fist rule of the catholic church at the time.
If you also watch the interviews at the end, the way the actors talk about the life of Martin Luther was with such passion and love. They were genuine.
We must remember, Luther was a man who only wanted what was best for the common people. However he had not one, but two major odds against him. One being the iron fisted arrogance of the early catholic church who was only concerned with money and power; the other was the ignorance of the common people.
Luther had great patience to work with the people, educated a large mass of people who couldn't even read or write at the time, just had faith alone. The ones who could read and write still couldn't read the Bible being the catholic church forbid it to be written in any language other then Latin although Greek is the original.
Thanks to Martin Luther, who single handedly hand translated the Bible into the common tongue for the people which infuriated the Vatican even that much more.
This may sound like I am getting rather complex just for a review, but thats what the times back then were all about.
However, back to Luther: The Movie, all this complexity makes sense and can easily be followed the way the director filmed this.
I wish I could give this movie 10 stars, although that still wouldn't be enough by far.
Enjoy :)

This is was a very good Historical account were foundations of faith came from and high price that was paid to get this message of justifcation by faith out and the corruption by the church that was going on during this period praise GOD for this fine work.

This movie is basically a series of riots with fancy costumes mixed in. More un-holy-wood waist of time. It is a poor distortion of history... various facts are right in the movie, but many others are downright wrong. The accurate facts are often very twisted in the way they are presented (definitely an agenda here). While Tetzel's selling of indulgences was of course true, the truth of justification by faith was lost in mish-mash of meaningless drivel. The producers/ director were consumed in showing dead bodies. A suicide/ hanging of a boy was shown and was very voyeuristic. A dialog scene had to work in execution/ hangings of the bodies in the background through creative angles. Riots with vivid pictures of the dead aftermaths including a mother and daughter that the director sought to build an emotional bond with the viewer throughout the movie also was also only a cheap attempt at an emotional pull. Those who gave this movie positive ratings are, as one reviewer confessed, "not interested in reading about Church history." Had they read even one biography of Luther they would have known better (I confess I have read several). This movie is trash and is no more a Christian movie than is "Jesus Christ Superstar".
