Product Description

Apart from the apostle Paul, Luke is arguably the most influential force in the canon of the New Testament. His Gospel and Acts occupy almost a third of the New Testament. Marshall provides us with a lucid guide to Luke's theology of salvation as it is unfurled in Gospel narrative, but always with an eye on its ongoing development in his companion work, the Acts of the Apostles.

Publisher's Description

Apart from the apostle Paul, Luke is arguably the most influential force in the canon of the New Testament. His Gospel and Acts occupy almost a third of the New Testament, and together their narrative voice carries us over a span of more than sixty years, from the birth of Jesus to the imprisonment of Paul in Rome. It is difficult to imagine our understanding of the New Testament period without Luke's writings. For this reason, the question of Luke's historical reliability has been repeatedly investigated. In this study Howard Marshall affirms Luke's trustworthiness as a historian. But Luke is more than a historian. He is also a theologian who finds his interpretive key in the great theme of salvation. Marshall provides us with a lucid guide to Luke's theology of salvation as it is unfurled in Gospel narrative, but always with a eye on its ongoing development in the companion work, the Acts of the Apostles. A postscript assesses the course of Lukan studies during the decade of 1979-1988.

Marshall is one of the best Evangelical writers today. This book covers an important topic. Some scholars focus on the historical accuracy of Biblical books at the expense of noting the theological message within them. Others focus on theological concerns to the point they give no weight to historical accuracy at all. However, as this book shows, the Gospel of Luke is written with both interests in the forefront. Luke intentionally writes as an historian, while also pursuing important theological themes. In other words, he sees theological truths as being embedded within historical truths. This is a helpful work.

Luke: Historian and Theologian written by I. Howard Marshall is a book that will benefit anybody who desires to understand the Gospel of Luke and the Acts more fully. In his book Marshall considers very important questions like for instance; is it possible to be a theologian and at the same time a reliable historian? He goes further and investigates whether Luke was faithful to his sources while writing the Gospel and the Acts. Then he tries to identify Luke's main themes in his writings.Marshall does not just give his opinion but first explores other scholars' works and then gives his careful judgementOne more thing: IVP publishing house should be ashamed of publishing this excellent book on such a low quality paper! Moreover, it is hard to read the book due to the VERY LOW QUALITY PRINT!!!
