Darrell Lane Bock, of Dallas Theological Seminary, has written a much needed commentary on the Gospel of Luke. While there are many other commentaries on this very important Gospel, Bock has set a new standard. His work is technical, yet without all of the usual verbiage. Although a massive tome (~2000 pages) it is extremely readable, and the format is excellent, especially if one compares the BECNT to WBC. Also, of special mention is Bock's seeming avoidance of constant references to the so-called "Q" document, even though Bock subscribes to such a view (erroneously in my opinion). This is well appreciated, as commentaries such as I. Howard Marshall's LUKE (NIGTC), focus far too much on Source Criticism. While this is not to say that Marshall's commentary is not exceptional, Bock's commentary is second to none. Anyone wishing to have a thorough grasp of LUKE cannot afford to avoid this magisterial commentary from a world renown NT scholar. One should also be aware of Bock's forthcoming commentary on ACTS in the same series (publication date unknown). This commentary will surely become the future standard on ACTS, as one cannot expect anything but a magnificant work from the pen of Bock. No available commentary on LUKE can compete with Bock's, including the works of Marshall, Fitzmyer, Nolland, Green, et. al.

Nothing even comes close to this monumental work on Luke by Darrell Bock. The format of this series is just excellent and I wish we could see some new volumes! At any rate, Bock has simply provided us with the most thorough exegesis of Luke that has ever appeared. Technical, yet lucid. Tremendous background information! Much synoptic interaction. A veritable feast of Greek helps. Critical interaction, including direct interaction with the "Jesus Seminar" at many points. These volumes are worth the price and will provide you with a wealth of information on Luke's gospel. Thanks to Darrell Bock for this excellent work!
