Publisher's Description

They’ve helped orchestrate the perfect day for countless couples. Now twelve new couples will find themselves in the wedding spotlight in the second Year of Weddings novella collection.

Sometimes the road to happiness is paved with youthful mistakes.

Hope Prentiss didn’t go to the Harmony High School senior prom. Instead, she and John Burke drove to Boise and got married. At eighteen. But when Hope panicked after saying "I do," the mail-order preacher assured her he just wouldn’t send in the paperwork. No forms, no marriage, no problem. Right?

Well . . .

Now, ten years later, Hope discovers that her prom-night wedding counted—and, as fate would have it, the jilted John Burke has just ridden back into town. And he’s staying with her Aunt Verna at the inn where she and Hope host weddings. Though Hope thinks she wants an annulment, a little time with John makes her think twice . . . and emotions between the more-or-less Mr. and Mrs. Burke reach a boiling point a soon as they get a moment alone.

With annulment out the window, Hope finds herself staring in the face of a divorce. But after spending some time with John and helping plan a Christmas wedding for a mystery couple, Hope begins to wonder if she really wants a divorce … or a real wedding of her own.

Hope Prentiss is dating conservative banker and future politician Chet Tuttle. She gave up on red-blooded men ten years ago when she eloped with John Burke instead of going to her high school promonly that didn't last even to the wedding night. She always thought the marriage wasnt official because they never sent the marriage certificate in but then she finds the marriage is still legal.

John is back in town, and is pleased to find hes still married to Hope until he finds out she's not pleased at all. The plot is kind of Sweet Home Alabama with Christians, only in reverse, as its John who left town and comes back to find his lady is dating someone else. But, like the guy in Sweet Home Alabama, he's managed to make something of himself, and learned some valuable lessons in the process:

Success was more than a healthy bank account, more than following your passion; it was putting God and family first.

Love at Mistletoe Inn was a sweet story and a lovely romance, but there was one plot twist that seemed contrived in that it was completely out of character for both Hope and John, and that left me with a somewhat sour taste in my mouth. It just didn't ring true, and because that action drives the whole will-they-stay-married plot it made the whole story seem "off".

The writing was good, and the cover is lovely. I liked Hope, and I liked John (well, mostly). Put it all together and I should have loved Love at Mistletoe Inn. But I didn't. It felt wrong, and while I didn't hate it, I didn't exactly like it either.

But after spending some time with John and helping plan a Christmas wedding for a mystery couple, Hope begins to wonder if she really wants a divorce or a real wedding of her own.

Spoiler alerts follow: Hope approaches John with the intention of asking for an annulment. I find it awfully hard to believe that after ten years Hope would immediately fall into bed with John. Now all of a sudden Hope and John want their marriage to work. The book just seemed to jump from wanting an annulment/divorce to being in love again. There was no in between where they got to know each other again. I realize this was a novella, but it just didnt work for me.

I was given this book for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.

I loved the premise of this story. A young couple rush off to get married but think it doesnt take just to find out that it did. What will they do?

It should be easy until they make their marriage official, if you get my meaning, then it becomes much more complicated.

Not to mention Hope is sort of dating someone elseyikes!

John just wants his wife back and will do whatever it takes to make her see that he really does love her.

The Christmas theme isnt overly present in this book but it was still a nice lead up to December.

Cindy seemed to work in a lot of depth into a quick read and I appreciated that. I didnt feel like anything was rush. Overall, I recommend this one :)

An e-copy of this book was given to me by the publisher through Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

Love at Mistletoe Inn by Cindy Kirk is the first in the A Year of Wedding Novellas for 2015. I read some from last year and really enjoyed them, but this book gets the new collection off to a rocky start. I do like how the books have titles now instead of the months. It makes the stories themselves sound more exciting.

Hope Prentiss has gone for ten years ignoring what happened her senior year of high school - marriage to John Burke. Once she heard how he didn't have enough money to pay the internet ordained preacher she decided she didn't really want to marry John after all even though they had already said their vows. Convinced that not sending the papers in would make them not legally married, they parted ways. But then Hope finds out startling news. She is still married!

John Burke decides he is ready to come back to Harmony and settle down. When he gets there, Hope approaches him about their marriage. Shocked that it's still valid, John is still happy because he has always loved her. Now here is where the weird twist comes in. After Hope tells him, the story then jumps to the next morning with her leaving his house. Whaaatttt?? And then she runs to an attorney to see if she can still annul the marriage. Uh, obviously not! This turned me off of the book like nothing else. She hasn't really seen or talked to him for ten years, and then she just throws herself at him? And now she wants an annulment/divorce?! Ok....

This story had no depth. It was just fluff. When I read a Christian story, I expect it to be clean and have some type of learning going on. Something I can take away from the book. This one didn't. Not even from the pastor. No Bible verses. Nothing. It was a well written book with a cute setting and a sweet, meddling aunt, but it was definitely not my cup of tea. My advice is to skip this story.

I was given this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

    Romantic Holiday story

    The NerdHerd Reads
Can I start off by saying that the descriptions for the stories in this collection don't actually describe anything. They're either too vague, or frankly, wrong. I'm not saying that it takes away from the reading experience, but it would be nice to know what I'm going into. But this was a cute little story.

10 years ago, Hope and John skipped their senior prom to get married. Hope immediately regrets it, is assured by the man that performed the ceremony that he will make it so that it never happened, and Hope and John go their separate ways. But 10 years later, Hope finds out that their marriage is actually legal and that she and John are still married. Oh, and guess who just happened to come back to town that day? (See what I mean about wrong synopsis? John was not a new man in her life, at all. In fact, they go way far back.)

This was a cute story. While I was a bit wary about some parts of it (like the whole reason they couldn't get it annulled which I'm not going to spoil but come one, take a guess). But Hope and John decide to give their marriage a shot before getting divorced.

I wouldn't say this moved that fast, although it is a novella so I can understand why the timeline was a bit sped up. But they were in love before, so seeing them fall in love again, this time in a more mature way, was cute and sweet. Even in this short amount of time, both characters went through a tremendous amount of growth. I had issues with Hope, but she does change throughout the story.

Although I have to wonder how the two were so dense they couldn't see right through Aunt Verna. I loved the background characters too, and how they added a depth and air of humor to the story. This is definitely a fun, romantic read perfect for the holidays.
