Another great book by author, Miralee Ferrell. I love the historical setting of this novel, the late 1800's end of the gold mining era in Last Chance, CA. Alexia is trying to tie up loose ends following her father's untimely death and save their ranch. Unbeknownst to her, her father had recently found gold and reached out to a friend to come help him find answers to some mysterious things going on at the ranch as a result. A mysterious stranger, Justin, comes to the ranch looking for a job and a more stable environment for his young son. This story has enough mystery and action to keep you turning the pages. There are horses stolen, fences cut, contracts dropped, love spurned, intrigue, murder, and a bit of romance. Can Alexia learn to trust God and those around her in time to save the ranch?
I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I was given a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review which I have given.
California was a wild and beautiful place in the late 1800s: mountain peaks, plateaus, valleys, canyons, rushing streams, magnificent forests so much natural beauty. One would think everyone should have been able to live in peace. But it seems there are always people who want more than their share and will go to any lengths to get it. Those who want to live in peace often have to be willing to fight to maintain that peace. Love Finds You in Last Chance, California shows the worst and the best of human nature. A young woman whose father has died suddenly is trying to keep their ranch going but encounters one unwelcome surprise after another. A young man whose wife has died and left him with an infant son is intent on providing a home for his son and repaying a debt to an old family friend. Evil forces are at work against both of them and it causes them to find a renewed faith in God. As with other books by Miralee Ferrell, there is romance, drama, and surprising twists to the story. There is a redemptive quality to the book that I always find enjoyable and uplifting. I recommend the book because it drew me in and I could picture the events and the various scenes quite easily. It made me want to be there.
I appreciate receiving a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to live in another place and time? This was a heartwarming story that takes you back to 1877. Ms Ferrells descriptive writing will take you to the mountain ridges of Last Chance, California. Your mind will see the rocky ridges, the steep cliffs, the cedar and fir wooded lands, and the beautiful grassy meadows of a California horse ranch and the surrounding area. You will enjoy a time-accurate story without being bogged down by historical facts.
Romance is blossoming between characters, while complimented with a mix of mystery and suspense that will keep you turning the pages. I enjoyed the innocent touch of a child woven within the story. I always enjoy the way this author shares her Christian faith through her writing. When a book is entwined with these wonderful qualities and surrounded by an engaging plot line, you will not be disappointed. Very enjoyable!
Alexia Travers father dies and she finds herself trying to run a ranch that is mortgaged to the hilt. The easy answer would be to marry one of the towns available bachelors, but being stubborn and raised without her mother, her strong tomboyish tendencies lead her to believe she needs no one. So when issues start to arise at the farm such as her farm hands leaving because they don't want to work for a woman and her fathers gold gone missing, she doesn't know what she should do. Could things possibly get worse? Yes. Yes they could! Justin Phillips shows up with a three year old boy in-tote, and against her better judgment she hires him. But what really is behind Justin's widow story and can she really trust him? Or is he a horse thief like the others accused him of being?
Last Chance, California will take you down the early mining tracks of Last Chance in the 1870's. You will learn to love a fantastic group of characters. I loved the hope that was laced throughout this book - that I could see hope and ways out for several characters - yet they still had to make their choice... but don't we all? I would love to learn more about Christy's story and Sander's story as well, not to mention a few others in the book! I really didn't want it to end!
What I really enjoy about Miralee's writing is that she really develops her characters so you feel like you know them and belong inside their little worlds. I couldn't help but admire Alex's gumption and will as she tried to work through her issues on the ranch in the late 1800's. She has quite the spunk and I wanted to cheer her on throughout the book - you know a good backbone, yet slightly flawed which makes her seem all the more lovable. I really enjoyed Justin as well - it's not often you find the a man with a baby booting it through the country side! A very daring detail to use and it works so well with this story. I love that I got to learn some history of the area as Miralee actually based the story around an actual place! I found that totally cool!
This was my first title I read by Miralee but I love historical fiction set in the old west the most so I picked this one up & I was so glad I did. It is a great story. Alexis was the main character who found after the death of her Father that the ranch they lived on was mortgaged & then things started happening that caused her more problems. Enter a man who her Father had asked to help prior to his death & he stood by her & they made things work, found out all the problems were centering around one man & they got to the bottom of things together. Along with her Father's friend & his son, they found a life together....Happily Ever After......
