The most significant relationship of the book is the relentlessly loyal friendship between Friedrich and Matthias. Since the Inspirationists are a group dedicated to peace and God, they support the biblical values of faithfulness, sacrificial love, and self-control. Dobson constantly alludes to sacrificial love as exemplified by Christ and the importance of living sacrificially for our neighbors, supporting John 15:13, Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (NIV). While Friedrich is away fighting, Amalie is forced to adapt to life in the new community and decipher Matthias strange behavior. She attempts not to let his cold manner affect her.
Detached from her parents and having only one friend to confide in, Amalie is focused on being a hard-working laborer in her kitchen and staying unresponsive to her true worries. It is hard to feel sympathetic toward her since her personality is almost unrealistically tough. Yet, her faithfulness is held in high regard by Matthias.
Just as the plot holds no real promise of adventure or excitement, the ending is peacefully predictable. Readers who enjoy the Love Finds You series or other novels of the same genre will enjoy it, but it is not a story that I related to with a modern womans emotions or experiences. BobbiePennsylvaniaAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Vivid HistoricalFebruary 18, 2012BobbiePennsylvaniaAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The history of Annapolis after the Revolutionary War comes alive in this beautiful story. The discrimination and mistreatment of the Tories was well-written and believable. I appreciated how Ms White showed American treatment toward the Tories in comparison to the treatment from England's tyranny.
It was also a beautiful love store. Our heroine always acted the way she assumed was expected. Our hero placed duty above feelings, even duty to our heroine. It wasn't until he made a horrible mistake that these two people begin to know and appreciate each other and each learns a lot about themselves in the process. Secondary characters in the novel enrich the historical and the love story and help our hero and heroine in their growth.
Janna RyanNorth Platte, NEAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Interesting Civil War backstoryOctober 15, 2011Janna RyanNorth Platte, NEAge: 35-44Gender: femaleI love the Amana Colonies and reading about how things were there way back when so this book was right up my alley. I loved the setting being the Amana Colonies as they were just getting started and it being in the middle of the Civil War but since it was in Iowa how did that affect a bunch of people opposed to war? This book answers that question. And what about if one man from Amana felt God leading him to enter the war even though it went against everything he had been raised to believe? This book answers that question too. I was kind of expecting some kind of mystery or suspense just because this book is written by Melanie Dobson and that wasn't to be found, but it was so enjoyable and I loved the characters. A very satisfying book.
Christy Lockstein4 Stars Out Of 5Civil War romance with faith and hopeJuly 25, 2011Christy LocksteinQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Love Finds You in Amana, Iowa by Melanie Dobson is the latest historical romance in the nationwide series. Amalie Wiese loves her life in the Amana colonies, and she volunteered to be one of the few women traveling from New York to the new community home in Iowa in order to finally marry her sweetheart, Friedrich Vincenz, and have her own kitchen house. The couple has been separated for a few years while waiting for Friedrich to come of age to marry, but their time apart has not changed the depth of their love for each other. Friedrich, however, is deeply affected by meeting a Union army officer and a former slave who confront him about his community's refusal to take part in the war. He tries to fight the growing feeling that God wants him to fight against slavery, knowing that he will disappoint not only Amalie, but his best friend Matthias as well, but he eventually gives in to God's urging and signs up in the Iowa Volunteers. Matthias is left behind to try and explain what he doesn't understand to Amalie, as well as fight the feelings he's had for his best friend's girl for ten years. Matthias hides his deep affection for Amalie behind a mask of anger, which makes the young woman even more alone in a new place that is nothing like she expected it to be. Each of these three must follow the Lord and their heart to find where they belong. Dobson pulls readers into this 19th century world through historical detail and great descriptions. Each of the characters is sympathetic, and readers will find themselves torn between Friedrich and Matthias. This romance is moving, heart-breaking, and in the end, full of hope. It's a solid addition to the series.

The Inspirationalist colonies in Iowa valued peace at all cost, but the Civil War came knocking on their door. Can God call one person to peace and another to fight? Can both paths be honoring Him?
Dobson's storytelling marries historical facts with well-developed fictional characters in a way that makes learning fun. She mixes an intriguing love story into the growing conflict between peace and war. The tear-inducing conclusion of this story is a beautiful picture of courage, forgiveness, and God's ability to make everything beautiful in His time. Love Finds You in Amana, Iowa will leave you pondering long after you turn the last page.
