Publisher's Description

So many things contribute to women’s struggles with weight that no matter what infomercials and celebrities promise on TV, it’s never as simple as 1-2-3 to “get it off and keep it off.”
That’s because the real issue usually lurks beneath the surface—in a woman's heart and mind. No matter how many sit-ups, push-ups, or miles on the treadmill you do, you’ll never see honest, life-changing results until you make peace with your inner self and the One who created you—take it from someone who’s been there and back several times (and dress sizes!).
Filled with great tips, recipes, advice, and encouragement, The Real Skinny on Losing It is a hilarious and blatantly honest story of Michelle McKinney Hammond’s own battle of the bulge and everything she’s learned about fad diets, nutrition, exercise, self-esteem, and self-worth along the way. Trust us—this is the last diet book you’ll ever need to buy!

Wow! I started this book thinking it was going to be dull, tedious and quite boring (I've never read a diet book before). But I was wrong! Michelle has a great sense of humor and tells it to you straight up - no sugar-coating it! She not only takes you through some inner healing of the heart, she also gives you her thoughts on different fad diets, exercise and how she feels you should really be living your life - through moderation, combining of different foods and exercise.

I walked away from this book thinking, "Hey! I can do this! I can have a healthier life and a better body." If you've struggled with weight loss, low self-esteem and just being utterly confused as to what you should do (after all, there are a bazillion diets out there - all promising the weight loss you long for), then you should really take a few hours to read this book and let it sink in. I know you won't be disappointed!

After years of having trouble keeping weight on, I now find myself having trouble keeping it off! Reading The Real Skinny on Losing It: True Confessions & Divine Revelations of a Former Yo-Yo Dieter by Michelle McKinney Hammond has been very inspirational and allowed me an opportunity to find humor in a frustrating situation.

Michelle has a real good sense of humor for a difficult problem for many people. I enjoyed her straight-forward attitude. And never having been a "diva," I found looking at myself as one gave me a new attitude!

At the end of each chapter there is some very practical questions that helped me look at myself, my eating habits and suggestions that I can apply. That's the "Keeping It Real" portion. Right after that is the "Diva Reflections." Here's an example:

Some of the things we war with in life cannot be won by natural means. Their roots go deeper to an invisible place with unseen forces that do their best work through our ignorance. After all other efforts have failed, it's time to look deeper and let God show us the root of the fruit that is showing up in our lives, on our hips, and on our lips. Sometimes we have to get past ourselves to see what's really in the way. The truth hurts, but it's also medicine that can set you free. So don't despise the process. Hang in there, my sister. (pg 83)

At the back of the book are some real yummy recipes that are easy to make. And satisfying.

This isn't your typical "diet" book. Rather, it's a book that will help you find the real reasons for the over-eating/ yo-yo dieting roller-coaster. She helps you get to the heart of the matter instead of just covering the outer problem. And it's all done with truth, humor and a willingness to share herself.

"No more volunteering to be a victim of the foods you are eating." The Real Skinny On Losing It is a divas life story about yo-yo dieting. Her failures and triumphs. Her divalicious tips at losing weight and keeping it off. Michelle Hammond lets you join her on a fun spiritual journey through weight loss. With her upbeat attitude you get that, don't be scared girl come on and join the real party! feeling.

A completely honest look at weight and women's struggle with it. Michelle gets down to the "nitty-gritty" about losing the pounds all while being healthy. I was pleasantly surprised with this book because, I have to admit, I was on the fence about reviewing it. I thought to myself,, "Eh, just another self help diet book, nothing new." But no, I was definitely wrong! There were elements brought to the table that I didn't even know could contribute to losing weight. Although she made the reading entertaining it did feel like she would ramble on a bit. But my favorite parts were the Keeping It Real and Diva Reflections at the end of each chapter. They gave you the chance to just stop and think and be honest with yourself. And as a woman who has struggled with weight, I certainly see this book as a great tool in helping women change their lifestyle for the healthy.

The recipes were a great bonus in the back of the book!

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is written as though you are having a conversation with your most-trusted girlfriend (you know, the one that always tells you like it is) and contains practical advice and tips on losing weight and keeping it off. Ms. Hammond gives examples of her struggles with weight issues, diets and programs. She details what has worked for her and then puts the pieces together to form a real world plan to help you lose weight.

Focusing on the underlying issues that many of us experience: poor self-image, negative self-talk and low self-esteem and taking inspiration from the Bible. This book helped me view my own weight issues in a new and different way. Instead of wallowing in self-pity and doubt, feeling like a failure, this book has lit a fire in me, making me want to lose the extra weight I carry around and keep it off. I am excited to begin my weight loss journey with a new mindset, for the last time. I can see myself incorporating many of the tips provided and making a lasting change in my life

I love that she explains so many of the diet's, programs and weight loss systems that she has tried. I truly believe that just like people are individuals, no "cookie cutter" plan will work for every body. Having the general overview of so many programs allows me to pick and choose the best from several programs and incorporate them into my own personalized plan. The one that will definitely work for me. This gives me the hope that's been missing in my weight loss struggles.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the Tyndale Blogger Network book review program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I am a pro at rationalizing my weight. After all, I've been doing it for as long as I can remember. So I'm not sure what compelled me to agree to read a book about weight loss. Maybe it was the fact that I knew the author really struggled with her weight--she wasn't some "Skinny Minnie" who had no concept of what it's like to be overweight. Whatever my reasoning, I'm very glad I picked up this book.

In "The Real Skinny on Losing It: True Confessions & Divine Revelations of a Former Yo-Yo Dieter," Michelle McKinney Hammond gets to the heart of most weight issues: the heart. It's not my head that tells me to eat that ice cream; it's my heart. It's not my head that tells me to continue shoveling the pasta into my mouth; it's my heart. If I don't control my heart, I don't control my waistline.

Hammond brings generous doses of humor and solidarity to her "tell-it-like-it-is" memoir/self-help book. She doesn't say anything you haven't heard before if you're at all familiar with dieting, but the way she says it makes so much sense that you just might take note. For example, when she talks about eating slowly, she doesn't just say "Chew each bite 40 times" or whatever that ridiculous number is. Instead, she talks about savoring each bite and giving your stomach a chance to signal that it has had enough, rather than inhaling your food and eating until you're ready to burst. She also points out that many skinny people eat slowly and end up eating less ... perhaps because their stomachs tell them when to stop!

If I have one critique of the book, it's that the last few chapters, which introduce the reader to Hammond's "Diva Diet," get confusing and contradictory. But that's okay--the thrust of the book isn't about one way to lose weight; it's about providing a needed kick in the pants to quit making excuses and start changing your life!
