Jim is a young British seaman on board the Patna, a ship full of pilgrims on Hajj, when disaster strikes. When they spring a leak and all appears lost, Jim and the other crew abandon ship. . . and the passengers. However, the boat doesn't sink, and when the crippled ship is towed to shore their cowardice becomes known, and an investigation launched. Jim tries to move beyond his past, eventually ending up a fictional island set in Indonesia.
