Tell us a little about yourself. I have been living as an urban missionary in the diverse city of Chicago for 17 years. Originally from California, God's call brought me to the bigger city to work with low income kids and families. Now I work in the same neighborhood at my church as a women's ministry director. Through all the challenges of ministry, I have grown to find joy in serving Jesus and not just pleasing myself! I love dinners with good friends, playing and watching sports, taking prayer walks in spring and just being at home with my cat Emma!
What was your motivation behind this project? The Holy Spirit kept bantering me (in a good way!) to write about singleness. I struggled to obey at first, because it has been a painful subject for me. However, I wanted to encourage others in their singleness struggles by being real - not sugar-coating the singleness struggles, but being vulnerable about them. I also desired to share the hope that was born in my life out of the struggles that I never thought was possible.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope people will sense a comradery from reading the book - that they will no longer feel guilty about or alone in their singleness struggles. I pray they will be supercharged to know God more and to let Him fill their hearts with His joy.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I was drawn into deep dependence on God to lead me in every sentence written. I continue to be amazed at the range of emotions I have felt as a single when I reread the book and reminded of God's faithfulness and love through the struggle.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I am challenged by John Piper - to surrender all. I am driven by Nancy Leigh DeMoss toward discipline and truth. I am motivated to step out in faith by authors old and new alike such as Amy Carmichael, Elizabeth Elliot and Frances Chan. Musically, I am drawn to Fernando Ortega and on the opposite end of the spectrum - Toby Mac!
