In these refreshingly unconventional meditations, scientist John Polkinghorne connects the perspectives of science and religion in honest and thoughtful reflections for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. Giving new meaning to the penitence of Advent and the hope of the Christian faith, he considers God's ultimate purposes along with scientific knowledge of the fate of the universe. Complete with Scriptural references and prayers, Living With Hope encourages Christians to think about the beginning and end of the world and to come to discover what it means to truly affirm God's purpose in creation.
Phil1 Stars Out Of 5DisappointedJanuary 21, 2015PhilI was looking for much more that I received from this book. I do not question the author, his purpose, his background, or his qualifications to write this book. It just did not speak to me personally. There was more extra-biblical material presented which I was unable to accept. In my opinion, it did not present much science from a supposed scientist which was the cause of my disappointment.

Massachusetts Academic5 Stars Out Of 5Wonderful and Comforting Insights from a Faithful Christian in an Age of ScienceDecember 15, 2014Massachusetts AcademicQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5John Polkinghorne is a wonderful writer and a wonderful Christian. As a retired theoretical physicist and an ordained priest in the Church of England, he has written extremely insightful meditations for the Advent season. He begins with a short introduction in which he explains the organization of the book--it follows the very traditional Advent themes of "The Four Last Things" (death, judgement, heaven, and hell). This Introduction is followed by 43 substantial meditations. I call them "substantial" because they are each about 2 pages in length and are logical, well-written, and laced with scientific insights--it encourages us to THINK about our Faith. As the sub-title says, this little book is a "look" at Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany from the perspective of a scientist. This is NOT just a book about science and religion, Polkinghorne has written many of those. Rather, it is intended to assist those who are already believers to meditate on what really matters at this time of the year.
homeschool mom1 Stars Out Of 5Nothing like the descriptionDecember 13, 2014homeschool momQuality: 2Value: 1Meets Expectations: 1This book really has nothing to do with science. I was hoping for a scientific viewpoint of Christmas, the star, the magi, something to do with nature and creation pointing to Christ's birth. Unfortunately, It is full of evolution and Catholic doctrine instead. Very disappointing.
