Following Little Britches and developing an episode noted near the end of Man of the Family, The Home Ranch continues the adventures of young Ralph Moody. Soon after returning from the ranch, he and his mother and siblings will go east for a new start, described in Mary Emma & Company and The Fields of Home. All these titles have been reprinted as Bison Books.
Pamela Gessler4 Stars Out Of 5For Cowboys and WannabeesMarch 30, 2012Pamela GesslerQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5I think that young boys will love hearing this book read to them. I'm an adult and I'm hooked on the whole series. But this book focuses on Ralph Moody's summer rounding up cattle and breaking in horses with rough and tumble cowboys. At 13 years old, he spends an entire summer away from his family, working from sunrise to sunset on a ranch. Hopefully, it was safer to send boys to live with men in the early part of the twentieth century than it is today.
Moody's books are full of lessons he learns, mostly about himself, but they're never preachy. He mentions them almost off-handedly. He has a cultural fear of God and deep respect for his mother's faith, but works with the men while the women go off to church.
These books show alot of what a boy goes through in his mind when he is striving to be a man and a good one. He is vulnerable but hard-working, feisty yet able to compromise too. I recommend it for good, family reading together.
Sylvia Biggs5 Stars Out Of 5December 10, 2008Sylvia BiggsThis book happens during the time frame of the second book in the series, Man of the Family. It was a story that deserved it's own book. The story of Ralph's family continues in #4, Mary Emma & Company. Excellent reading as are all in the series.
Josh1 Stars Out Of 5June 14, 2003JoshI got this book because I thought it would go straight into where #2 left off. No it didn't I was reading the same stuff and finally I got to where #2 left off! I was disappointed because I started #4 and it starts right from #2 so I am confused!
