Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  There's all the usual stuff-- I'm a reader, writer, and speaker, but I'm also the mom of four sweet homeschooled-all-the-way boys who are now graduated and in various stages of adult life. Homeschooling was a joy that I continue to share, and literature was and is one of my great loves. I graduated from Mary Baldwin College with honors and an English major (of course!), and I have several ongoing writing project and an incredible teetering stack of books that I'm reading or going read.

What was your motivation behind this project?  As the only child of older parents, I grew up reading. I craved excellence and beauty in what I read, and I found it in the classics. As my husband and I started to teach our four sons, I couldn't find the curriculum I wanted to use. I wanted my sons to read and enjoy full-length classic literature, and I wanted them to know how to approach literature in context so they would understand the text and become discerning readers. I began putting the curriculum together to teach my boys, then used it to teach online classes for others. Finally, Andrew Pudewa encouraged me to hurry and get it into a form everyone could use, and here it is. There are five levels altogether, with nine units each, and they cover the works I believe that most people should read.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope that students will gain a taste for beautiful literature, and an understanding of how to think analytically and write well. I believe they will be very well prepared for college-level work once they've completed Excellence in Literature. I hope that parents will enjoy sharing these works with their students, and that they will appreciate that the course is designed to be self-directed.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Returning to old book-friends and finding new classics to share has been a great joy. As I re-read each book to see how it fit into the whole, I found new truths and saw new things in each. My belief in the necessity and riches of the great books was deeply reinforced. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to share it all!

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  My worldview is deeply and unequivocally Christian, and that is grounded in scripture. Choosing favorite authors is a bit like choosing favorite children-- hardly possible! However, I return to books by C.S. Lewis, Edith Wharton, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, and others. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo is unforgettable, and the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins and George Herbert is a blessing.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  The five levels of Excellence in Literature are written so that they can be used by students alone or in classrooms or co-ops. We are creating a support website and will be adding resources continually. Enjoy!
