It takes awhile for grasp that this writer is slowly guiding the reader toward the emergent church movement (though peeking at the back cover reveals this). There is much I don't approve off in that philosophy, but that is not my reason for low rating. It's just that the book is so vague. It's as if the author wants to take you somewhere but has lost the directions for his destination. Much of the conversation is just wandering talk with lots of esoteric sounding language. I still would have given the book a higher rating despite my angst against the emergent church movement if the author had actually laid out some concrete ideas and examples. It's not that I don't think todays churches could use some changes and improvements, but using oblique references to what these might be does not solve the problem. The emergent church often waters down what some Christians believe to be primary and important doctrines and issues, but if appealing to those who aren't drawn in by the average church was this author's objective, I believe he failed miserably.
