Bonnie Kahler, immersed in grief since losing her husband, attempts to rise from the ashes of mourning. Will love and faith give her the power to conquer the demons within and evils without? In an attempt to outrun his past, Preacher Travis Whitworth arrives in Kahlerville, incognito. When he stumbles across a dead body, suspicion falls on his shoulders. Is Travis in too deep to win Bonnie's love? As Bonnie finds herself drawn to Travis, her life and heart are threatened. When secrets unravel, will she be strong enough to face the twisted truth?
Bonnie Andrews, a widow with three children, has spent the last two years grieving the loss of her husband. To lessen her pain, she turned to drinking and as a result neglected her children, her ranch, and slowly sunk into a pit of self hate. Zack, her eldest son, is also grieving the loss of his father and hating his mother’s addiction, and becomes a rebellious, angry boy. This family is on the brink of destruction.
Travis Whitworth is the new preacher in town. His heart longs to do God’s work and pastor his flock faithfully. He determines to help this family by befriending Zack and hopefully curb his rebellious ways. As he works to guide his new congregation and deal with the rude, obnoxious teenager, Travis is plagued by his failures in his previous church. Yet, a lightning storm and a murder bring truth and healing to this troubled family, in a unique manner, that proves true the Scripture verse, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good” (Rom. 8:28).
Although this story takes place in 1898, the issues it deals with are very present today. The ugliness of sins such as gossip, slander, murder, and hypocrisy are presented against the hope offered through redemption. The love story between Travis and Bonnie is lovely, but more moving is the deep love and friendship the reader sees develop between Zack and Travis. This friendship becomes a beautiful illustration of unconditional abiding love. – Vasthi Acosta, Christian Book Previews.com

I would have to say that the most gripping part of this book was the immense responsibility that Kahlervilles new reverend, Travis Whitworth, takes on by claiming the young misguided youth, Zach Kahler, as his charge. Zach Kahler has lost his father and after overhearing a conversation between his uncles, Grant and Morgan, with his father before he dies, Zach comes to blame his mother, Bonnie, for his father passing. When an unexpected tornado hits Kahlerville, Zach comes to the decision of allowing Jesus into his heart and forgiving his mother, and God, for the death of his father. Bonnie has recently given up a drinking problem that began after the death of her beloved, but now she finds herself being pursued by a adulterating lunatic who refuses to take no for an answer. When Travis discovers the dead body of a young woman, Bonnie and Travis must learn to rely on the truth of God's everlasting love and His always present strength in order to solve the muder mystery and save Bonnie from being the tatget of a selfish mans lusts. A powerful read that will definitely keep you up all night.

I'm very pleased with my purchase. This is the 3rd book in the Texas Legacy Series. I purchased all 4. Not only is it a really good read, it's full of wonderful Christian values. I'm waiting for her to write the 5th book.

I have enjoyed other books by Diann Mills but I was disappointed with this series. Book three seemed too predictable in its story line and I thought the evil of Lester Hillman too dominating - unsettling and not what I was wanting to read.

"Lightning and Lace" by DiAnn Mills is the third book in the Texas Legacy Series. This is a beautifully-written, suspenseful novel about a family in pain and the community around them. Bonnie is a young widow with a troublesome son who simply wants her family restored. Travis is the town's new preacher. He is helping Bonnie with her son, Zack, and trying to keep his past a secret. There is also a criminal on the loose. He is beating women, and no one is talking about his identity.
I was hooked on the intrigue and developing family issues and romance from the very first chapter! What a great book! Now, I must go back and read the other two! I also can't wait to read #4, "A Texas Legacy Christmas"!
