ksnapierLima, OHAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Fascinating bookJuly 17, 2014ksnapierLima, OHAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Light the Fire is the kind of book that readers have difficulties putting down once they begin reading. The characters are complex and the incidences in the book are down-to-earth.
Even though this sounds similar to other books of this genre there is a difference. God is interspersed throughout to help the characters develop. He also is there through the resolution of problems that are encounters.
Mary Manners is an excellent writer and I plan on reading more of her books now.
I was given this book by the author and bookfun.org in exchange for my honest and fair review.
NanceeGrand Rapids, MichiganAge: Over 65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A journey to forgiveness and trustJune 20, 2014NanceeGrand Rapids, MichiganAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Both main characters in this poignant novel are tormented by pain and loss. Having built walls to protect their fractured lives, both Rena and Cody shy away from any form of commitment. Shame, guilt, fear and loss follow Rena. Cody is broken by loss. Rena's broken family ties and the anguish from former tragedies haunt her. Cody's devotion and involvement with his family and his faith are what keep him putting one foot in front of the other.
In this poignant novel Mary Manners has created two shattered individuals and developed their characters through various stages of grief, fear of commitment and brokenness toward healing. The author writes with empathy, compassion and sensitivity, and weaves the threads of loss and torment into a tapestry of healing elements. Faith, trust and forgiveness are presented with integrity and credibility. I found this book to be emotionally charged and very inspiring!

Cathy ThelenMelbourne, flAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Story of God's redemptionJune 9, 2014Cathy ThelenMelbourne, flAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This was a great story of how we see God forgiving us but don't think others will forgive us and how to forgive yourself.
Rena has a past that she doesn't talk about to anyone but her best friend Kelsie. As she becomes more attracted to Cody she must tell him the truth about her past.
As the story develops things happen that make Rena face her fear and tell Cody about her past.
Mary Manners the author has found a new fan with this book. I really enjoyed this book. I will definitely tell others about this wonderful book.
I was given this book free from bookfun.org for my honest review.
kingsdaughter1611ILAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Beautiful Story of Healing.June 8, 2014kingsdaughter1611ILAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I honestly wasn't sure what to expect when I received two book in the mail to review from Mary Manners. I had never read any of her books and sometimes you tend to be a little wary of opening a new one. You might fall in love with the book or you might just end up disliking it. Boy am I glad I took a chance on this one!! I found not only a delightful book but a new author I will be looking for in the future:)
Light the Fire is about Rena, a woman who has been abused in the past and has a distrust of men. So it is kinda funny when she is bowled over by this huge St. Bernard, owned by a man who would like to be friends. Rena is the daughter of a builder and knows her way around tools. Thus she goes to help build for a family when their house burns down. This is where she meets Cody and his dog. Cody is really sweet and though he is tempted to give up on her when she keeps rebuffing him, he sticks in there. Many times just to be there for her. When he sits outside the door one night, I was close to tears. He is so sweet. You don't meet many guys like him at all. His patience is very telling of the God he serves.
This is a short book(I wish it was much longer) but a lot in it. Great detail is shown to the characters and developing them in that short amount of time. The secondary characters are well done too. This is a book I would urge everyone to pick up, not just people struggling with abuse. I really felt a close kinship with Rena and the way she fights to be strong but is so wary. Wonderful book from Mary Manners! My review of Buried Treasures will be up later this week as well.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are 100% mine.
shanfromcanCanadaAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Another great page turner from Mary MannersMay 9, 2014shanfromcanCanadaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Another delightful read from Mary with lots to keep one reading. Rena, one of the main characters has returned form New York, and we learn bits and pieces of the why's as we continue the story. She has issues, as we all do, and is struggling big time with them.
Then there is Cody, whom we know very little of except for the fact that he is Kyle‘s best friend and now bestman as the wedding approaches. And then there is Kelsie, best friend of Rena, also involved in the wedding, but they have never met.
Rena, daughter of a builder, with a tool belt all of her own, volunteers to help build a home for a family whose house burned to the ground is the meeting place, but definitely not your average meeting. And thus begins the ‘story'. Neither can keep their eyes off the other, and this leads to Cody volunteering to help at the rec center where Rena volunteers. They begin working on fundraising for an extension to the rec center and we the reader begin to see just how alike these two are, right down to sleepless nights, although for different reasons.
Rena has a variety of talents and uses them to the best of her ability, volunteering to help with reading at the rec center and working at the local library. She is by no means your average librarian and goes the extra mile to make the story hour for preschoolers special for the little ones who attend, giving out extra hugs, stories, and more as she reads the needs of the attendees.
Cody is struggling to figure Rena out.
"Rena's so guarded. She's got the eyes of a spooked mare. Getting to know her is going to take some time and a whole lot of prayer"
Sammy yawned and pawed the coffee table, where Cody's Bible lay open.
"Yeah, you're right." Cody picked up the Bible and turned to Psalms. Let's see what we can find in here."
He finally gets her to agree to go out with him, and then tries to back out. Kelsie refuses to let her do so, knowing that Cody is a good guy and that Rena needs to have some fun. But there is an emergency , and she leaves a note attached to the door for Cody.
He refuses to be detoured and sets up another date, a date that few would expect and where she learns still more of this young man and more importantly about grace in the Bible study following.
"For the Lord is a sun and shield: The Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly." Psalm 84:11 pg. 62
Both Cody and Rena have meetings to sort out their struggles, and next time they meet, Rena feels a change within her.
"Ever since she'd spoken with Pastor Marcus, a peace had settled over her. She sensed a change, however slight, blossoming in her. She couldn't put her finger on it, but she felt different, hopeful.
Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you_Psalm 55:22 sand through her head." pg. 110
There are other characters and situations going on in this wonderfully written story that will keep you reading, and you will be delighted at how well the different situations are used to teach about grace.
Thank you to book fun.org and Mary Manners for giving me the opportunity to read this delightful book in exchange for an honest review.
