Shelley McKinneyIndianaAge: 45-54Gender: female1 Stars Out Of 5Skewed and just sadOctober 9, 2011Shelley McKinneyIndianaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 1Value: 1Meets Expectations: 1We've used several different Alpha-Omega publications in our homeschool before and I've always been very pleased with them. The Lifepac format is excellent and very user-friendly. However, my liking for Alpha-Omega has come to and end with this Civics course; I can't believe how utterly biased and anti-Catholic it is. Of course, I knew Alpha-Omega was a Protestant publisher, but my children and I have been terribly grieved to read their view of the "Reformation" presented. As I read over the passages my kids pointed out to me, I was completely baffled. When Jesus knew His time on earth was coming to an end, He told His disciples not to have troubled hearts, that He would send His spirit to guide them into ALL TRUTH. And that's exactly what He did. The Holy Spirit became known to the apostles in that upper room and Christianity was put on the path it has been on for the past 2,000 years. So how, then, could any person - especially a Christian person - truly believe that the Church was somehow wallowing in darkness and corruption for 1,500 years after Christ ascended into heaven? That truly defies all logic. And then there's the part about "the first officially recognized Pope." It seems to me that a truly authentically researched text would have made certain to be historically accurate, no matter what the private agenda or biases were. The is not one single positive comment made about the Roman Catholic Church, and that, to me, speaks of a level of ugly prejudice that I don't care to support with my money. Because no, the Church is not perfect: the Roman Catholic Church is guided by the Holy Spirit, but run by people and people can mess things up. But what about the enormous contributions the Catholic Church has made in spreading the gospel of Christ and the message of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ across the world? What about the great saints, who lived and moved and had their being in His holy presence? Is there nothing positive to say? Really? Just some information, which even my children could refute, about how the Church denied the Bible to people at the Council of Toulouse? No mention was made about how poor, faulty and innaccurate "translations" were being promulgated, making it necessary for the Church to step in so that His sheep wouldn't be led astray by false teaching. And speaking of false teaching, that leads me back to where I began, by saying that this Civics course, with its bias and inaccuracies and agenda, isn't worthy of your children's time and your money. Even the most ardent Protestant deserves to read what is true, because Christ abides in truth; not partial truths, not skirting-around-the-issue. It leads me to wonder what the writers of this course are so afraid of? If their brand of Protestantism is so great and so worthy, why would it hurt to report that the Catholic Church has made some monumental blunders, but that it has also done great good - MUCH more good than bad - to the glory of the Blessed Trinity? And where is the reasoning, the intellectual honesty, in defending the idea that Jesus would leave His lambs wandering alone in the wilderness, stalked by the Church as a hungry predator for over a millennia, until He deigned to lead them into "all truth" as promised? It's just ignorant and it makes me very sad. No more Alpha-Omega products for my family.

This Civics course is only 1 semester in duration, and packed with good information about our government. I look forward to learning along with her!
Kathy Sporleder-reitz5 Stars Out Of 5August 31, 2010Kathy Sporleder-reitzI was sure my daughter would hate this subject, but the material is user friendly enough that she has enjoyed it so far. We are only on the first book, but she is going through it pretty quickly. I hope the rest of the books go as good.
