Jen Rosio1 Stars Out Of 5Easy for the teacher. Wearying for the student.April 12, 2014Jen RosioQuality: 1Meets Expectations: 1The good thing about this LifePac Bible Study is that you can "set it and forget it." Just tell your students what pages to do for the day and you are good. The answer key tells you what grade to assign afterward. That makes it easy for the teacher.
However, this curriculum has not lit a fire of excitement for God's word in my home.
First, the answers are a bit hard to find in the text. Often my student will look and look for an answer and then write what he thinks is correct --- and then he gets it technically wrong, according to the answer key. So, a lot of times, I end up throwing out the answer from the answer key.
Second, the questions are simply not good. For example, after a lesson about Adam, free will, and sin, there is this question: "Select two compound words from this section and write them here." First of all, they never defined compound words. There were no compound words in the 24-word vocabulary list at the beginning of the book. I don't even know where they found the compound words that were given in the answer key. I looked and looked in the text, and could not find them. Second, what do compound words have to do with Adam, free will and sin?So, not only was that a bad question, but the writer went on to add insult to injury by following this question with, "Now, use each word properly in a sentence."
Finally, I don't like the tone of this curriculum in places.
Here's one of the first statements regarding God's love, page 4: "Stated simply, nothing in you and me attracted God's love. We read in God's word (Deuteronomy 7:7-8), "The Lord did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any other people; for ye were the fewest of all people: But because the Lord loved you_"
Yes, there is definitely evidence in the Bible that we are sinners, and that God hates sin. I have no qualms about that.
But the context of this Deuteronomy passage talks about God's choice of the Israelites as God's people, in view of all the people He could have chosen. When it comes to God's love, and teaching it to a seventh grader, maybe the person of Christ would be a good place to start? Like the way Jesus longed for Jerusalem to turn back to Him, like a hen would gather her chicks under her wings, in Matthew 23:37? So while the interpretation of the Deuteronomy passage in this part of the study could be debated but it's my feeling that the tone of the curriculum seems a little detached, in general, and that the student feels weary in the end.
I hope to find a study that ignites more joy and motivation to study the Bible itself.
