The first-fruits of his study were given to the public in November 1811 as the Life of John Knox, which contains illustrations of the history of the Reformation in Scotland. This work exercised an important influence on public opinion at the time and is credited by many as (along with other important works of the era) transforming Edinburgh and Scotland by making active, believing Christianity acceptable to the upper classes, and available to all.
