Publisher Summary

Is This as Good as It Gets?

Personal crises and disappointments have led many to the pessimistic conclusion that "my life sucks." Underneath the contemporary slang are universal and timeless questions about the human condition. People of every age, in every kind of circumstance have wondered to themselves and others: Will my life ever be better than this? Is this as good as it gets?

This book is an honest and compassionate look at the real struggles we face in a broken world where bad things do happen. Ramon Presson, a marriage and family counselor, describes his own significant personal struggles, including hospitalization for depression. Using the letter that Paul wrote to the Philippians from prison, Presson shares that hope and joy are possible even when life disappoints. Full of practical suggestions for how you can live with purpose and meaning right in the middle of your everyday struggles, When Will My Life Not Suck? is a hopeful treatment of human suffering from someone who has personally lived it and counseled others through the wilderness.

When Will My Life Not Suck? asks the question that many Christians want to know an answer. The title of a book draws the reader in first. Ramon Presson's new book does just that. His book offers hope to those who wonder if their life is as good as it can be. Presson has more than twenty years of experience as a marriage and family counselor, as well as the author of numerous books about hope, stress, and relationships. His history, both in the office and in his own life, provides real support for everything he says.

Presson's voice comes out boldly in every chapter. Every paragraph feels like the author is talking directly to the reader. He blends easy-to-understand teachings, entertaining wit, and genuine hope into each chapter. He backs his lessons with real-life examples and applicable Scripture verses. The book of Philippians is the foundation of his message, with numerous other verses from the Old and New Testament used to supplement them. His book breaks down common questions and fears (poor health, job loss, wayward children, lack of faith), and then builds up to the hope and assurance that Christians can find in God.

One problem I had with the book stems from Presson's bluntness; the title itself is very forward in its subject. Presson does not pull back from difficult issues, and some readers may be uncomfortable with his direct tone. Presson also tends to belittle other works. He cites a few books by other authors that he thinks are presenting the wrong message. These few times can come across as unprofessional. He does cite other works that he agrees with, but they are few. Support from other authors may have made his points that much stronger.

There are many books that promise hope to the reader, but few that actually follow through with it. When Will My Life Not Suck? is one of those books that really offers authentic hope and confidence. Presson guides each reader through hardships in his life and the lessons he has learned from them, as well as from his counseling work. He shows how real life can hurt, but how there is real hope to be found. I would recommend this book to any Christian who is struggling with finding his or her place in life. – Todd Naevestad, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

When Will My life Not Suck: Authentic Hope for the Disillusioned is written by Ramon Presson, an author, speaker, and clinically certified marriage and family therapist. This book explores the life of the apostle Paul to show how hope and joy are possible even when life disappoints. Through biblical and personal examples the author seeks to answer the question, "When will my life not suck?" This book helpfully explores anxiety, prayer, dealing with one's past and much more.

Mr. Presson throughout this book demonstrates not only that he knows the material he is teaching but that he has experienced the material to varying degrees in his own life, and takes to heart its message. Some books are good at offering theory while others in this genre lean towards offering to many practical suggestions without any sufficient grounding in the Scriptures. When Will My Life Not Suck thankfully is a book that combines biblical knowledge and practical experience wonderfully while at the same time pointing the reader to the person and work of Jesus Christ.

This book would be helpful to those who are struggling with anxiety, dealing with anxiety or wondering how to be content in Christ. At the end of this book the author invites the reader to think big because the believer serves a big God. In doing this the author sets the readers gaze away from themselves and towards the Cross of Christ. I encourage you to pick up this book and learn what it means to biblically deal with significant struggles in ways that bring glory to God.

This is an interesting book, but some of you will have to get past the title in order to enjoy it. Try not to let that bother you, for if you've experienced pain & loss, heartache & frustration, despair & anxiety, then you'll find this volume helpful.

Presson gives his chapters some very clever headings that make you want to turn ahead and read them. Here are just a few examples:

    • Dancing With the Scars

    • Whenever Whatever Happens

    • Content or Discontent: Choosing My Tent

    • There's Rat Poop In my Corn Dog

The author uses many humorous anecdotes, most from his own life, to lead into the helpful advice he holds out to any who have lived in the school of hard knocks. I found that I identified with the author and he with me as I read through this book. You may wish to read it twice, however; the first time, read it quickly just for the sardonic humor, usually directed at himself; then read it again more slowly and absorb the thoughtful insights.

I only have the one disclaimer about the title (and I know Presson's addressed this before). When I was in the sixth grade, I used this word directly at a classmate sitting next to me. Back then (1969-1970) this word was definitely verboten. I got hauled into the principal's office, had to stay after school until my parents picked me up. When both of them were in the car, I knew I was dead. A severe scolding, mouth-washing-out and grounding later, I knew never to use that word again. It is with that unfortunate memory that I reluctantly took on this book. Thankfully, the author dissuaded me not to pan this book right off the shelf. Remember the old adage: don't just a book by it's cover (or title).
