PJ Sugar receives shocking news that she's inherited the Kellogg family mansion. Though she has no idea why, the timing is perfect-PJ has clearly worn out her welcome at her sister's house. Unfortunately, the mansion is in shambles, and PJ is short on cash. Rescue comes in the form of Max Smith, a mysterious handyman willing to trade his services for PJ's investigative skills. But PJ already has a full docket with cramming for her PI license and nurturing a growing romance with her boss, Jeremy Kane. Can she take on Max's case without dropping the ball?
Back for the third time, local PI-in-training PJ Sugar encounters more crooks, mysteries, and men than she can handle in Susan May Warrens Licensed for Trouble. PJ inherits a rundown mansion and hires a handyman with a mysterious past to repair it in exchange for her investigative skills. While suitors Boone and Jeremy vie for PJs heart, PJ becomes more involved in solving not only her handymans case but a much more personal one as well. Struggling with both her troubled past and her uncertain future, PJ wonders about her ability to achieve a career as a PI while being worthy of Gods love. Psalm 3:5-6 becomes an anchor point for her: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all you ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
PJ comes to life in Licensed for Trouble through her small-town humor and authentic uncertainty. The relationship between PJ and her boss, Jeremy, grows and becomes more complicated as she tries to decide between him and her high school sweetheart, Boone. The intense action and well-written plot are what make this novel more than just a book: it becomes a real adventure.
Quirky and far from perfect, PJ is a character whom readers will identify with. Her problems are not solved instantaneously, and every so often she has to pay for her stubbornness. Even so, she exhibits a strength and willingness to fight for justice that the reader cannot help but admire. The other characters have their faults but support PJ and take on unique roles of their own.
As an avid reader, I was delighted to find that this book was creatively written and full of wit. I had not read the previous two books in the series but found out that I could still follow the story and could develop a love for the characters. If you are a young woman that enjoys good values, a dose of mystery and an unconventional love story, you will enjoy Licensed for Trouble. -- Ashlee Amann, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
