Having married into the Roger Williams family tree recently, it was a pleasure to find this book about my wife's ancestor. It provides an excellent background of the English reformation and events surrounding the Puritan movements' coming to America. For Baptist purists and for those who believe that it was Williams, not Thomas Jefferson, who first coined the idea of a "hedge" between church and state, this is a must read. It will reshape your view of American religious history.

Thoroughly enjoyed this insightful look into one of the most forgotten but important figures in American if not world history. You come away realizing that he was a very spiritual man with convictions for which he was willing to suffer much. The extreme significance of his stand against the civil authority over the individual's conscience in matters of religious choice can not be underestimated. Even in this "enlightened" age we have great portions of the world (eg. Islamic countries) where individuals are compelled by force or other means of duress to believe as the majority believe, where state and church are one and woe to them who dare believe anything else. To quote from Mr Williams, "If people are forced to conform to a particular religion, the end result is that they shall be of no religion at all, all their days." Roger William's thoughts and convictions are as needed today as they were when he spoke and wrote them. All in all Edwin Gaustad's style and presentation are very fluid and well put together. He basically lets Williams speak for himself rather than editorializing, which I appreciated. I heartily recommend this to others who have any interest in knowing from whence we came. It is from the legacy of such outstanding people as Roger Williams that the Lord has allowed us to have the freedoms we enjoy in North America, particularly the freedom of worship according to one's own conscience.
