Product Description

Sobrino's starting point is the suffering poor of El Salvador. As he demonstrates, this vantage point reveals a different face of Christ, and consequently demands a different mode of discipleship. Rather than an "abstract" Christ who identifies with the powerful and counsels passive acceptance of unjust suffering, the poor have discovered a new image of Christ as "the Liberator," one who lived and died in service of God's Kingdom in history. Surrounded by the deaths of countless thousands, including his own martyred Jesuit community, Sobrino brings to his reflections a sense of pathos and challenge that transforms this theological study into a work of profound spiritual reflection. Sobrino aims in this work to promote not only understanding but solidarity and conversion.

Jesus the Liberator, by Jon Sobrino is a compelling look at the status of the poor in Latin America but actually of all the poor of the world. The plight of the dispossessed of the earth is brought to the forefront and the pressing question that rings loudly throughout the book is, 'What would Jesus have you do?' If Jesus is actually the liberator of those trapped in sin then what would he do if faced with those trapped by birth and nationality of whatever race and circumstance that are being burdened by the complacency of a world caught up in its rush to acquire wealth and status?
