Publisher's Description

Have you ever felt as though you didn’t recognize yourself in the mirror and yet you’re frantically trying to keep that image together? Felt bound by the dreams you had for life that you now realize have forced other expectations on you? Or maybe you’ve laughed at one of those insanely ridiculous moments in the day when absolutely everything goes wrong and no matter what you do, the grand purpose seems elusive.

Let’s be honest. We all have a standard in our head that we believe is the perfect Christian woman, wife, and/or mother. Yet, have you ever really examined what that standard is? Yes, God absolutely has standards for what those roles are to be, but is He our source, or is it the peer-pressure-don’t- be-the-odd-one-out-on-Sunday-morning drive to fit in that is driving us away from authenticity and raw faith to outward performance?

Amy Spiegel knows this struggle well and notes, "so many of the women I know seem to feel the same tension in their own lives, teetering on the edge, praying someone will be there to catch them if they fall." There is a grand purpose to where you are today; join Amy in Letting Go of Perfect, to look at what it means to truly know the woman in the mirror as well as the God who created, redeems, and equips her.

Author Bio

Amy Spiegel is a mom of four active kids, wife to a college professor, and graduate of Taylor University with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Political Science. Yes, a Christian author with a degree in something that involves the environment, indicative of her drive to shatter stereotypes and walk in faithfulness no matter the perception. She has spoken at various women’s events, writes weekly posts for WisdomAndFollyBlog.com, and helps her husband, James Spiegel, with his writing projects like the book about their family adventures, Gum, Geckos, and God. She’s sharp, funny, and really cares about the relationship that matters most.

Editorial Reviews

"We have to surround ourselves with people who speak truth to our ragged souls. Amy Spiegel is one of those people, and I treasured reading her words because they reminded me that behind every woman we encounter is a story that can’t be told from her lipstick or her minivan."

Some good points, well thought out. Almost all of her illustrations are of her role as a mother of young children. Not something I could relate to.

This book was very well written. The author made herself vulnerable with examples from her own life which were very easy to relate to. She also made clear connections through scripture to God's idea of perfection in our lives.

I found the book to be a great page turner. As the revelations came to me with the help of the message the author was giving I couldn't stop reading. The author gave the reader many opportunities to question and reflect on their lives, motives and thought patterns, comparing them to the standard of Christ and the will of God.

In a very clear manner the author communicated that perfection isn't what God wants from us, submission in every aspect of our lives is what God wants.

I thank the author for this message. It was one I, and I'm sure many others, needed to hear.

What do you think being perfect is all about? The author of this book takes some of the most common ideas of perfection and points you to the Lord as our standard instead of the worlds.

My favorite part of this book was in the back in a section called Letting Go Of Perfect This Week. It takes each day of the week and gives you something to work on that day. It really helps draw everything she is trying to get across together in an easy to follow format. You work on a particular principle for the day and by concentrating on that you can really make changes in your life in one week!

I liked how the author presented this book. She was very open and the words were very loving and not condemning. I feel any women reading this book will not feel so alone in her struggle. I also think any women reading this will gain some great principles to apply to their life. I gave this book 5/5 stars because I felt it was well written and worth all women reading.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

Since the sixties when the feminist movement began the campaign to brainwash women that they are not fulfilled unless they meet all the goals of a full time plus job, two stellar high achieving children, a perfect marriage, and a lovely home, women have struggled to keep up the insane pace. Self esteem plummets when one constantly attempts to meet goals that cannot be met by a human in 24 hours without help. We watch TV where people appear to create beautiful living spaces, glorious meals, and a generally perfect life with the click of a remote. Amy Spiegel stands as one who has been here, showing others that this is not what God expects us to create in our lives.

When I began this book, I thought, well this is mainly for younger women because I've already matured past this point. Then I'd turn a page and something would really hit me. This is a beautiful book that helps today's women make that step toward the realization that ‘perfect' is an illusion that does not exist. This book is for women, those who are struggling to meet obscene goals, and those who know someone who is struggling to meet those goals.
