Tell us a little about yourself. Although I was raised a California girl, my family and I moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia in 1995 where my husband and I still reside with our beagle (Talei which means Precious).
What was your motivation behind this project? I originally wrote a 62 page handwritten manuscript in 1979 (my junior year of high school) in my creative writing class. Life happened and it wasn't until my baby girl (one of four) entered college, that I dusted off my dreams and began to rewrite the story. Our family loves the East Coast where we vacation and after my girls went on a Mission Trip that included time on Ocracoke Island, I began to draw inspiration for my Safe Harbor Island. It wasn't until after going through a bout with cancer that I was able to publish this story; which became so much more for me.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope they will be inspired, encouraged and enjoy a little *vacation* with the mer. I hope they will feel a part of the family as they travel from Safe Harbor Island to the South Pacific and realize that the family of God is a large one.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? My youngest read my story to me one chapter at a time while I was going through radiation, before publication; she helped me to edit it. I can honestly say that even in those dark days, I laughed, smiled and cried joyful tears as the words of my story gave me encouragement.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I have definitely been influenced and inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Liz Curtis Higgs, Karen Hancock, Stephen R. Lawhead, Gilbert & Lynn Morris, I could go on and on, including musical artists like Kutless, Toby Mac, Chris Tomlin, Jamie Grace, Mandisa, and on and on.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I'm currently publishing my sequel, Legend of the Mer II ~ THE NEW GUARDIAN. It should be up for Thanksgiving and I hope you'll check it out as the Legend and the adventure continues! God bless! ;)
