I read this book in about two hours. I thoroughly enjoyed Felber's writing style. The lessons he weaves into the story are invaluable. This is a book worth discussing in a small group setting or giving as a gift to a high school or college graduate. The fact that it is a quick and easy read increases the likelihood that it will be read.

What could be better than a wonderful story from which one can also take away powerful life truths? The Legend of the Merchant and the Monk is just that! Terry Faber weaves twelve principles of living a successful life into a story told by a grandfather to his grandson. Such principles include: Be meek before God but bold before men; Live debt free and below your means; See challenges as stepping stones, not obstacles. They include sound advice for finances as well as wise living. A study guide in the back includes discussion along with easy access to Scriptures used throughout the book.

While many would not pick up nonfiction Christian living titles to read, they may read a story. Being in story form also helps one remember the principles being taught. This story is valuable to any age! I enjoyed it as a middle-aged adult, but it would also be extremely valuable and enjoyed by older children, young adults, and college/career ages.

Faber points out that we are all ministers and called to Kingdom work; some are called to be monks (priests/pastors) while others are called to be merchants (business/other professions). Together we build His Kingdom supporting each other in different ways.

This book is a wonderful resource for those who will not be in vocational ministry. The author does a fantastic job showing us that no matter what we do vocationally, we are all in ministry and are serving the Lord no matter what our "day job" is. We should not be separating these two things. The story of the monk and the merchant is enjoyable and there are so many practical applications in it. There are many great principles to live by and I like the fact that the study guide includes scriptural basis for those principles. I can see why Dave Ramsey has all his employees read this book within 90 days of hire. This book helps those who choose not to be the "monk" to realize they have just as vital a ministry in their own workplace. It also encourages the "monk" and the "merchant" to work together, as one body. The only part of the book that had a slight "red flag" was it could possibly be viewed as "health and wealth" doctrine. Meaning, follow these principles and you'll be rich. I don't believe that is what the author is saying but I can see how some people could see it that way. God's blessing does not always involve material wealth. There are many forms of God's blessing. He does, however, provide for all your needs. That being said, I think this book is geared toward business minded people or those who already have material wealth and what the Biblical response should be to that particular blessing. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have already recommended it to several people to read.

I received this book free from booksneeze.com in exchange for my review.

Non-fiction books are intended to tell of events or facts that are based in reality. Fiction books are intended to tell a story, though not based in reality, that, hopefully, will be of interest to the reader. This book was both.

The story is interesting - as Grandfather tells Julio the story of his life in business. This story includes the necessary set of characters: monks, pirates, friends, fires, and family. Together they contribute to a story that I could not put down - often feeling the need to finish just one more chapter before turning in for the night.

But as the story develops, Grandfather's mentor and friend, Allesio, shares twelve principles that were to serve Grandfather and others well throughout the years. Some of these principles were ones I was able to apply within my life (e.g. "LIVE DEBT FREE AND BELOW YOUR MEANS". Others, I knew, but found difficult to apply (e.g. "SET ASIDE THE FIRST 10 PERCENT TO HONOR GOD."). And, finally, there were some that appear to be just common sense (e.g. "FINANCIAL PROSPERITY IS OFTEN CONNECTED TO SOUL PROSPERITY").

The book is more than story and principles - it also includes a very brief list of Bible references to support the principles discussed in the book. In addition to the brief list of Biblical Scripture references, there is a twelve session study guide for a group to use as they discuss the book. The author suggests that each participant read the entire book before beginning a group study of the concepts and themes contained within the book.

My only concern with this book is its tangential focus on what some have called "The Prosperity Gospel" - if taken to extremes, the principles in this book could lead one into the trap that financial blessing will come to all who follow these principles. It must be remembered, that, while following these principles does not guarantee financial blessing, it, they will guarantee God's blessing.
