One dark November night a stranger rides into a small prairie town. Who is he? Why has he come? The townspeople wish he were a doctor, a dressmaker, or a trader. But the children have the greatest wish of all, a deep, quiet wish. Then a young girl named Lucy befriends the newcomer. When he reveals his identity and shares with her the legend of the candy cane, she discovers the fulfillment of her wishes and the answer to the town's dreams. Now will she share what she has learned? Recommended for ages 4 to 8.
Lori Walburg is a freelance editor, a writer for the NIrV Kid's Devotional Bible, and the author of The Legend of the Easter Egg. She lives with her family in Grand Rapids, Michigan. James Bernardin graduated from the Art Center College of Designing Pasadena, California, and was awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Society of Illustrators. In addition to the best-selling The Legend of the Candy Cane, other books he has illustrated include The Legend of the Easter Egg. He lives with his family in Washington state.
What kind of new store does a pioneer prairie town need? Everybody waits and wonders as Christmas draws nearer and the new store begins to take shape. Then, one little girl offers to help and finds something nobody had suspected - candy! Plus a marvelous red and white one, which, when turned upside down becomes a J. Each part of this candy tells the story of Jesus. What a marvelous Christmas Eve surprise for all the townsfolk.
Noted for her work on the NIrV Kid's Devotional Bible and The Legend of the Easter Egg, Lori Walburg published The Legend of the Candy Cane in 1997. Since then it has consistently become ever more popular. Now you can own or give some lucky child (or adult) this book. New York Times best-selling illustrator Richard Cowdrey's illustrations are animated, colorful, and intriguingly full of detail. Between them, these two present an intriguing tale, a wonderful read, and food for Christian thought. Just to round things off nicely, this book ends with a brief, true history of how the candy cane took shape. This is a good book for anytime of the year, but especially during the season of our Lords birth. - Donna Eggett, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
