One dark November night a stranger rides into a small prairie town. Who is he? Why has he come? The townspeople wish he were a doctor, a dressmaker, or a trader. But the children have the greatest wish of all, a deep, quiet, secret wish.
Then a young girl named Lucy befriends the newcomer. When he reveals his identity and shares with her the legend of the candy cane, she discovers fulfillment of her wishes and the answer to her town's dreams. Now will she share what she has learned?
Vibrant illustrations by Richard Cowdrey bring to life a timeless tale by Lori Walburg, a story that will help families celebrate the mystery and miracle of Christmasfor many Christmases to come.

I know I do! Lori Walburg, several years ago, wove a story around my favorite Christmas treat and now the story comes in a board book format perfect for little ones who may be likely to tear the fragile pages of most picture books.
When John Sonneman moves to town and begins to re-do an old run-down store, the townspeople are curious as to what he is doing. Little Lucy offers to help and discovers Mr. Sonneman is opening a candy store. One of the special treats is new to Lucy--a candy cane. Mr. Sonneman shares with Lucy his story of the candy cane and its special meaning. Together, they invite the townspeople to the store's opening, giving each a candy cane and sharing the Christmas story using the candy cane to tell the precious story.
I have loved this story since it was first released when my children were small. Having it available in board book format is a wonderful idea and opens its use up to the smallest of children to be able to hold the book and turn the pages themselves. What a special way to share the story of Christmas each year with your family!
I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and was in no way obligated to leave a postitive one.
mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5A Beautiful Christmas storyOctober 4, 2014mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: maleAs a pastor and Father, I am always looking out for great Christian books for my two sons, and now that they are separated by a few tears, the challenge becomes, "How do you entertain both the six year old and the one year old?" Well, now that Christmas books are starting to hit the shelves, there is an opportunity to find books for the entire family, one such book is the Legend of the Candy Cane by Lawrence O Richards and released by Zondervan publishing.
First of all, make note that this is a board book - so right away this is geared towards a younger audience. Second, anyone unfamiliar with the tale should know that this is a Christian book, so the story is about tying the message and Jesus together.
1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his stripes you have been healed.
Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
However, it should also be noted that this is just a "story" and while it is a beautiful story about the shepherd's crook and the blood of Christ, there is no actual historical evidence that this is true. As the title suggests, this is a "legend" More than likely, peppermint sticks that were already widely common were bent into a "J" shape so that they could hang as Christmas decorations.
This book is a wonderful story, sure to pull at your heart strings and guaranteed to be a winner in your home each year. The illustrations are beautiful and my entire family loves it.
To many people, the candy cane is a meaningless decoration seen at Christmas time or just a piece of candy to be eaten and enjoyed, but with this book you can give a new meaning to it.
Thank you to Zondervan for this advanced copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
MaureenTSyracuse NYGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Sweet and EducationalOctober 3, 2014MaureenTSyracuse NYGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5What a sweet interesting book The Legend of the Candy Cane is even though is geared for toddlers, it kept the attention of my nine year old. The book is made of hard cardboard, and great for little hands to carry around.
The book is beautifully illustrated with bright colors, and the children noticed the dog and cat in the pictures. The boys wished they could be Lucy and help unpack all that candy; a childs dream comes true.
When it came time to tell the legend of the Candy Cane, they were enthralled at the story, and sad about Jesus blood being represented by the red and white stripe. They have looked this book over and over, and are able to read a lot of the words themselves. This one is a real keeper for the Christmas Season, right on our coffee table.
I received this book from Booklook Bloggers of Harper Collins Christian Book Publishers, and was not required to give a positive review.
