So I will have to admit that, I am one that sometimes judges a book by its cover. Looking at the cover of this book, I felt sad that there just didn't seem to be anyone that could be as handsome as me. But aside from my good looks, the cover of this book seemed to draw me in with what appeared to be a book about men. I mean, it did have a man on the cover and the word "fools" was in its title. I hadn't read any other book by these two ladies, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Either way, I tuned into my favorite station on Pandora (The Blake Shelton Channel) and cracked open the book.

Eric Bennington seems to be as close to drowning as any character I've read about in a long time. His family is devastated by allegations of molestation of his son on another family member, his wife has filed for divorce, and he's lost custody of his daughter and gained custody of his son. Through it all, he's also trying to keep his business afloat after some shady dealings with a less than scrupulous contractor. Balancing court appointed counseling appointments, deadlines on building projects and the demands of the family, Eric seems to be a victim every time he turns around. Well, as we know, there are always 3 sides to every story, my side, his side and the truth. The book tackles not only the sensitive subject of the molestation allegations, but it also delves into the legacy of the family and how they went down this path. When Eric seems to be victim, we uncover truth not only about him, but about the relationship that he had with his father. Through this book, Eric is blessed to have a confidant that becomes invaluable when the family secrets begin to unravel. Will Eric ever have a better relationship with his son, with his ex-wife, or his own father? Does his son learn from the mistakes from the past and make changes in his life? Is Eric's confidant able to help him see the only true path to redemption? Buy the book!

I love to read a book that gets me emotionally attached to the characters. I love to read about a character and "care" about how their life unfolds. In this book, I get all of that and more. I found myself emotionally involved in how the interactions between the characters would benefit or hinder their spiritual growth. During one interaction between two of the characters, the authors make a great personification of God: "Many people have this false idea of God as a bully who hangs over us waiting to rap us on the knuckles with a ruler if we don't obey. It's true there are consequences, and it's true that God has given us principles, or rules if you will, in His word, to obey, but not because He's a bully or power hungry of something. It's because He created us. He knows us intimately. That means he knows what can hurt us - even destroy us - and what can help us, what can give us peace and bring us joy". That kind of portrayal of Christ is fantastic and one that helps me see what a living, breathing God I serve really is. Later they describe our "Legacy of Fools" like this: "It is a generational curse that gets passed down from parent to child until it becomes so ingrained that is is all a family ever knows. It has been handed down by parents who reuse to walk in the light of God's Word and refuse to be held accountable by the light of God's Truth". That kind of heartfelt discussion throughout this book is refreshing and definitely a great reason to never put it down.

Is this a "guy's book"? Does it have suspense, adventure, intrigue? Are there super-heroes or sports figures? No to all of the above. What it does have, though, is a true look at a family and the effects that generational curses have on them. It shows us as men, that listening may be one of the greatest traits that we ever need to perfect. Yes, this book is fiction, but it opened my eyes to so much while I was reading it.

This book is called Legacy of Fools and is written by Missy Horsfall and Susan Stevens.

This is not your typical Christian fiction novel. This book tackles some heavy material. There is child abuse, drinking, and even child molestation. From reading the information about the book you get the impression the story is only about Eric Bennington and his journey to freedom in Christ. However, this book is really about a family and their journey to healing.

The story is well written, meaning the characters are well developed and the story flows well. The story itself unfolds like a television drama. Nevertheless, I felt like the message of redemption in the book gets lost in all the details of the family issues. This is not a book you will sit and want to escape into. It was hard to read sometimes. With all that goes on in the world I really did not find myself enjoying reading a fictional story about some of the same negative things. The one redeeming quality was how the story lines were wrapped up at the end of the book.

I only gave this book 4/5 stars because I did not find it enjoyable reading about such heavy material. That is only my opinion though you may find it intriguing.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based solely on my opinion of what I read
