Editorial Reviews

David W. Hall makes many bold claims about the influence of John Calvin—"Calvin was an event-maker who changed the parade route and left a very large imprint on Western history" —"Love him or hate him, Calvin was a change agent—and one whose influence was for the better. The light Calvin brought to society made the world a fundamentally different place after his life's work began to be displayed"—"John Calvin, at his five hundredth birthday, is not the property of one denomination or religious tradition. His thought and work are far greater than that"—and then provides the evidence to back up those claims. As a pastor who has read widely and deeply on his subject, Dr. Hall provides a positive appreciation of Calvin's life and influence for those celebrating the 500th anniversary of his birth.
This gem of a book is the perfect introduction to John Calvin on the 500th anniversary of his birth. Typical errors and caricatures are gently debunked. More importantly, David Hall shows us how so many of the blessings of modern life we take for granted are the legacy of the Genevan reformation. Also, as he demonstrates, the number of theologians influenced by Calvin is astonishing. Most of all in this marvelous book Calvin’s humanity is revealed; he even becomes our friend.
David Hall has gifted us with an innovative, succinct book on John Calvin and his influence in church and society in everything from education and benevolent assistance to politics and economics. Combined with a stimulating account of Calvin's life (which disables numerous caricatures) and tributes about Calvin from Baptists, Anglicans, Independents, and Methodists, The Legacy of Calvin is a fascinating read for students of the great Genevan Reformer. Some sections, such as Hall's description of Calvin's humility, are the finest I’ve read in all of Calvin literature. For a quick yet informative read about Calvin and his massive influence in the church and the world, this is the book.
I heartily commend David W. Hall’s excellent overview of Calvin’s abiding contribution to the life of the church. Read Legacy of John Calvin and you will understand why half a millennium after his birth, Calvin remains a vital spiritual leader for the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ.
