Love this integrated language arts program! I wish I had discovered this program years before with some of my older children. It integrates writing, spelling, grammar, reading, literature, narration, etc. in that gentle way that doesn't bore the child with twaddle and busy workbooks. (Those who follow Charlotte Mason methods will appreciate this curriculum.)
The blue book, in particular, integrates a reading program with language arts and even associated crafts and field trips. It does explain in the curriculum where to start with a non-reader and where to begin with a child already reading. Not all children are taught (or able) to read prior to the first grade. So take the suggested grade level and apply it to your child's abilities. That is the beauty of homeschooling, that you can apply curriculum to your child at their level and enjoy it as such. (We began 1/2 way through kindergarten.) I loved the varied lesson plans that utilized auditory, visual, and kinetic methods. This is marvelous to help discover what type of learner your child is.
Finally, this curriculum is a terrific bargain. The cost of the kit for an entire year is exceptional. Associated optional literature books can be checked out at the library for further savings. The Red Book is already waiting on the shelf for our next year.

Excellent product for the right child.
This is a great comprehensive language arts curriculum. I love that it incorporates classic children's literature. The curriculum comes with numerous readers that are written very well so that a child can easily learn to read them.
I bought this for my kindergartner who is very much a math person and has zero interest in reading. I hoped this would generate interest and I think it will. However, we had to start half-way through the book with the blends because she already knew here letter sounds and short vowels.
The Blue Book is VERY basic material. It is NOT first grade material. It is Kindergarten material. This is perfect for a kindergartner or an advanced preschooler.

Strong reader in K? Skip to the Red Book
I really love the LLATL curriculum. I've used it for my 2 oldest kids, and I plan to continue using it for my younger ones as well. The only problem I had with this program is that it starts off assuming the child cannot read as a 1st grader. My oldest daughter has been a strong reader since the end of K, so there was a lot of repeat information. We ended up skipping big chunks out of the lessons with her. Her sister will start this book in August, and I think it will be a perfect fit for her. She is not a very confident reader yet, so the repition will be good for her! Overall, I love LLATL, and so do my kids!!!
