stephanie J5 Stars Out Of 5After 10 years of homeschooling, I finally found my favorite L.A. program!July 25, 2016stephanie JQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I'm a homeschooling mom of 10 years, so I love the 'Literature Based Charlotte Mason Method' styles and we have used a lot of Sonlight curriculum. I love Sonlight's idea of literature based L.A. but I always found their curriculum to be a bit cumbersome, and busy work oriented. 'Learning Language Arts Through Literature' is what I always wanted Sonlight to be. If only I had discovered this 10 years ago! I feel that this curriculum has the perfect balance of actually learning to read, write, and spell WELL, but isn't too weighty with trivial things for the parent to read. The things we do are useful, yet fun! It follows an incredibly clever and well written format!
Though I use the Charlotte Mason Method, I'm also more of a 'strict' mom in that I want my kids to actually learn on their grade level in case they ever had to take a standardized test...this curriculum really is a perfect balance of everything you would want. I love that the lesson plan comes straight to the point, gets the job done, but is fun and truly literature based...but not tedious. Each parent could make it easier or harder depending on their child's needs. It is also one of the best priced on the market.
tutucheeMalaysiaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Good ProductOctober 25, 2014tutucheeMalaysiaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I am currently homeschooling my elder son who is 6 years old. Since English is not our mother tongue, I faced problem with what type of book that I should get so that I will be able to cover all aspect of learning this language. I am glad that I found LLATL. All the lessons are well planned for us, I only have to follow it without much time of preparation. It has integrated aspects of learning phonics, reading, comprehension, spelling, writing and literature in one book. My son begins to read after he learned the step by step phonics. To be able to read is our ultimate goal of learning phonics. As for writing, I would think that the provided lesson is not sufficient. Therefore, I substitute it by writing bible versus and after few times of practicing, I will dictate it for my son to write it or if he can memorise it, he simply write it on his own. We also enjoy very much on reading the recommended literature story books. I have ordered RED book for next year homeschooling.
TXTweetyAge: 35-44Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Not what I was expectingFebruary 20, 2014TXTweetyAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 3Value: 2Meets Expectations: 2I was very excited when ordering this, but it was not at all what I was expecting. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but this certainly was not it. This might work for some kids, but my kids did not like it at all and neither did I. I would recommend trying to find someone who has this so you can look through it before you spend the money on - it may be everything you are looking for, but then again (as in my case) it may not. This is the 2nd curriculum I've tried - luckily my kids are early elementary so no major issue. I'm finding I am more successful simply figuring this out on my own borrowing books from the library and simply covering the very basics of reading & writing. I'll have to find something more in depth soon, though...
SueHSaskatchewan, CanadaAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Exactly what I was looking for!July 5, 2013SueHSaskatchewan, CanadaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is the perfect curriculum for my daughter who is just emerging from kindergarten work.
The review in the beginning is a bit simple for her level but as we moved on I felt very confident that she would be getting a full spectrum of ELA with this curriculum.
I would recommend getting all of the readers for this curriculum as well as they are classics that you will read together for many years to come and it helps to have them on hand when you need to review anything.
JustMe5 Stars Out Of 5May 1, 2013JustMeQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Love this integrated language arts program! I wish I had discovered this program years before with some of my older children. It integrates writing, spelling, grammar, reading, literature, narration, etc. in that gentle way that doesn't bore the child with twaddle and busy workbooks. (Those who follow Charlotte Mason methods will appreciate this curriculum.)
The blue book, in particular, integrates a reading program with language arts and even associated crafts and field trips. It does explain in the curriculum where to start with a non-reader and where to begin with a child already reading. Not all children are taught (or able) to read prior to the first grade. So take the suggested grade level and apply it to your child's abilities. That is the beauty of homeschooling, that you can apply curriculum to your child at their level and enjoy it as such. (We began 1/2 way through kindergarten.) I loved the varied lesson plans that utilized auditory, visual, and kinetic methods. This is marvelous to help discover what type of learner your child is.
Finally, this curriculum is a terrific bargain. The cost of the kit for an entire year is exceptional. Associated optional literature books can be checked out at the library for further savings. The Red Book is already waiting on the shelf for our next year.
