Kathy5 Stars Out Of 5Language Arts the Natural Learning WayApril 1, 2014KathyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Learning Language Arts through Literature is based on the educational philosophy of Dr. Ruth Beechick and her natural learning method as outlined in her books, "The Three R'," "Language and Thinking for Young Children," and "You Can Teach Your Child Successfully." The curriculum is authored by the late Debbie Strayer, a homeschooling mother, teacher, author and public speaker, and Susan S. Simpson, a teacher, author and publisher.
Learning Language Arts through Literature Orange Book is a comprehensive language arts curriculum which teaches spelling, reading, grammar, composition, research and study skills, higher order thinking skills, creative expression and penmanship. The authors have chosen "real books" which are the back bone for the curriculum's book studies. "Real Book" selections include: "The Boxcar Children," "Wilbur and Orville Wright," "Benjamin Franklin," and "The Sign of the Beaver." Literature passages from "real books" are utilized for copy work and dictation. The Orange Book includes five units: Research, Journal Writing, Poetry, Newspaper and Book Making. Learning Language Arts through Literature incorporates creative expression activities such as illustrating poetry, recitation, writing an ad, haiku and limerick into the daily lesson plans.
The instructors guide is comprised of easy to use lesson plans spanning a period of 36 weeks.
Each lesson is made up of the following components: New Skills Taught, Materials Needed, Scripted Lesson Plan, Higher Order Thinking Skills, Answers, Examples, Diagrams and References to the student activity book. The Skills Index is an easy to use reference for the teaching parent. Assessments allow the teacher to evaluate the student's progress. Review activities follow the lessons to provide the student with additional skills practice. Placement tests are available online at the Common Sense Press website.
As a homeschooler, I have perused several language arts curriculums. I cannot praise this curriculum enough! Learning Language Arts Through Literature receives an A+ from this homeschooling parent!
JennTNAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great ProgramJune 8, 2012JennTNAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Learn Language Arts Through Literature is a great program. I like that it's all in one. It teaches everything for language in a way children can understand. My oldest child did not like the writing from dictation (but she does not like writing at all unless it is strictly creative with no adult intervention). The reading selections are always wonderful and my children enjoyed them tremendously. LLATL is set up so that children can use words they misspell throughout the week as their spelling words. We supplemented the spelling because I felt my children needed more practice with that. Stronger spellers probably would not need anything extra. Overall we really enjoyed this curriculum.

I like that it is an all-in-one program, so I don't need to find individual curricula for the various parts of Language Arts. I will say, however, that I do use a different handwriting program and skip the handwriting portions of LLATL.
LisaM53054 Stars Out Of 5April 17, 2009LisaM5305I needed a way to streamline our language arts and this curriculum has really fit the bill. It covers all the bases nicely although I have also supplemented the spelling with Spellwell C. It has just enough practice for each concept that my son does not get bored. My only gripes: the pages in the activity book should be perforated (or sold loose-leaf) and the teacher's manual should be spiral bound. I really like the book choices.
Cecilia Rouse4 Stars Out Of 5August 21, 2007Cecilia RouseWe have been working with this curriculum for about 3 weeks and I really like the integrated language approach. It does a good job covering reading and grammar, but I am undecided on whether we will need to supplement the spelling portion.
