This review and analysis of Salvation Army history focuses especially on the process of clericalisation within the movement. The Army provides a case study of the way in which renewal movements in the church become institutionalized.

Harold Hill, a Salvation Army officer since 1972, holds a Ph.D. from the Victoria University of Wellington. He as served the Army in Zimbabwe and New Zealand, doing pastoral education and administrative work in the latter location.
