‘There is no such thing as a perfect leader_ great start to a leadership book! Each of us is wired differently and leads differently according to our gifts. Does that make us better or worse than any other person? No. One leader can't do it all.

Shallenberger includes a leadership assessment to help you discover your leadership style. It follows a theater theme: Director, Stage Manager, Drama Coach, Theater Manager, Stagehand and Production Assistant. From this test you can discover what your style is, read a Bible case study on someone who falls into that category as well as a contemporary leader, like Jim Wideman and Craig Jutila, to name a few. You can also read about how to be effective in this role as a leader as well as other tips and ideas.

I've done several personality tests in the last few months for a course I'm taking, but this one is a little different. It's not really about your personality but your style as a leader and how you lead. I enjoyed learning more about myself and how I can be more effective in the role that I have as a children's pastor.

I also see how each role at one point or another has been a part of what I do, however that doesn't mean that I do them well or that they are my strength. The key to being a great leader is to know what you're good at and surround yourself with people who are better in other areas than you. We can't do it alone_ well we can try but not do it well. It's a challenge to admit we can't do everything, but when we lead in our strengths we can accomplish so much more for God.

I encourage children's pastors to read this book, figure out how you lead and then find people on your team to help you in the areas you're not strong in. You'll grow as a team, as a ministry and I believe accomplish more for the kingdom of God in the process.

By the way, it's an easy read!

Author/Artist Review

Author: Larry Shallenberger
Located in: Erie, PA
Submitted: April 15, 2006

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm a pastor, a dad, and a writer. I'm a fairly ordinary leader, but I have the gift of being able to narrate what I'm learning.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Again, I need leaders to become comfortable with their God-given skin. God is an artist, he doesn't machine out "cogs" to do church-work. There's a plethora of leadership-voices. And it's time we stop idolizing a mere handful of them.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  My desire is to liberate leaders from the myth that they need to be the perfect "one-man-show" leader. I want my readers to understand that God has given each leader a unique style that can add to a ministry team, and that interdependance and deep community can blossom.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Right now I'm loving Donald Miller. I can't read enough of him. I love the humor and conversational tone... and his ability to simultaneously be profound.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  You can catch me at www.larryshallenberger.com or www.childrensministryandculture.wordpress.com
