This book started out a little slow for me. I was about a quarter of the way through before I really got interested, but after that I didn't want to put it down. The story flows smoothly enough. The author's description of the Moses Lake and Larkspur Cove communities really drew me in. I love small towns!

The characters were well written, but I didn't feel a real connection with Bart or Andrea. I can relate to their feelings of loss, but that's really where my connection ended. I did enjoy watching Andrea begin to heal from her divorce and watching her grow as a person. However, I didn't feel like Bart grew or changed at all. Sure, he made some decisions regarding how he was handling his life, but I felt they were kind of abrupt. The secondary characters, the regulars at the Waterbird Bait and Grocery and Len and Birdie made the story far more interesting.

The reason I'm giving this book four stars is because of the message. My new favorite thing to do while reading a book is to mark passages that really speak to me. While I didn't mark up the whole book with sticky notes, I did mark several pages that I thought made excellent points. The message of the book is two-fold. Andrea realizes that having joy, real joy, in your life was a choice each of us has to make. She also has to learn that God is there, even when you can't see Him, hear Him, or when you deny He is. He is in all places and you only have to be still and listen to hear Him. Mart learns that when times get tough, it's easy to blame God instead of realizing that while we don't know why things happen, God does and you don't do any good by turning your back on your faith.

Overall, this was an enjoyable story. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

There was a lot of information in this book about Moses Lake and the area. I liked the Wailing Woman story and the mockingbirds. I liked Mart's character being the game warden and his buddies at the Waterbird. I liked Len and Birdie. I learned so much from Len teaching Birdie about the simplest things and Birdie was so content with what she had. I understood Dustin and his problems. What I had trouble with was Andrea and her problems. She seemed really shallow like sneaking down to the boathouse was so childish. She kept watching the water at night looking for Mart coming in his boat. Her and Mart were adults. The middle of the book got so sluggish repeating Andrea's problems that I got bored. Then, toward the end things picked up and it became a page turner to get to the end. It was an OK read.

This review was written for Larkspur Cove - eBook.
This was a good read. This is a good book prevalent to today's society. I like the discussion questions as we use them to review our book for book club.

I REALLY enjoyed this book and Lisa Wingate has quickly become one of my new favorites! I enjoyed the element of mystery in her story and found her message to be inspiring. I would highly recommend this book and the second in the series--Blue Moon Bay.

When I first picked up "Larkspur Cove" I didn't know what to expect because I have not read any of Lisa's books prior. However I was pleasantly surprised! It was powerfully written with great details about Moses Lake, Texas (makes me want to visit!) as well as the characters emotions! The book was also very heart-felt!

I thoroughly enjoyed learning the ins and outs of a game warden as well as licensed professional counselors (who go four wheeling to get to clients in flooded areas!) because I did not know much about either! I also really enjoyed learning about Moses Lake, Texas! It sounds like a wonderful place to live with a beautiful, scenic environment!

One of the things I loved the most about this story was Birdie's situation and learning about other children who were in similar situations of previous (or current) abuse! It was so heartbreaking near the end to see what kind of abuse Birdie was experiencing before she moved in with her grandfather! Andrea also stirred my heart in how to parent her son as a single mom! Her story really helped open my eyes to women who are struggling as a single mom in raising their children because I realized maybe I judge too harshly on these amazing women. I have no idea what's it like to raise a child by yourself without a spouse and who I am to "point fingers" at their situation! I came to see that I need to be more like Rev. Hay and reach out a helping hand like he did with Len rather then talking about how they need help! God wants to use the people around them which includes me! Mart's story was good too because I could definitely relate to living in the past; wishing you could have changed things or been there to stop a tragic event.

Something else i really appreciated about Lisa's writing is the balance she has! When I was starting to think about if another character would come back in the picture, they did! She knew how to bring in and bring out any certain character while making the story flow wonderfully!

Overall, Lisa's book was great, but is it definitely a deep book that deals with tough topics that society had! However you can see God's grace working in every situation (no matter how dark the circumstances might be and Andrea's story shows the proof).

One of my favorite quotes from this novel is "Joy, I realized, isn't so much a circumstance you find yourself in but a choice you make." What a powerful truth and out of many that Lisa mentions in "Larkspur Cove"!
