It had taken four long, difficult years to tame the virgin prairie of Dakota Territory. Looking back through all the heartache and the body-breaking labor, Ingeborg Bjorkland knew that God had been with them every step of the way. Dreams that had turned into veritable nightmares had been reshaped with the promise of a new day rising, and her marriage to Haaken had been its sure sign.Hjelmer travels west to work on the railroad, and after sending only one letter to Penny, who has agreed to wait for him, he is not heard from again. As the months pass, Penny is pursued by other eligible suitors, and her love for Hjelmer is sorely tried. Will he ever return to keep his promise? America's westward expansion continues, bringing the railroad to their area. Before them lies the challenge of proving up their homesteads, developing a sense of community, building wooden barns and houses, a schoolhouse and a church, a grain elevator and store.
Besides writing both books and articles, Lauraine teaches at writer's conferences across the country and has an active speaking career. She and husband Wayne have two grown sons, four grand dogs and live in the country where Lauraine can garden, sew, do crafts, cross stitch, enjoy her birds and eventually have a horse again.

JF5 Stars Out Of 5great 1800's fictionJuly 26, 2012JFQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have really enjoyed the Red River series, including A Land To Call Home, by Lauraine Snelling. If you like historical fiction from the 1800's this is highly recommended. It's also suitable for pre-teens/teens as well. The characters truly rely on their faith and the hope that is packed in the bible. This is so hard to set down once you get reading..

They are very well written, and I would recomment the highly. It gives us an idea of what our ancestor's went through when they came from Germany to America, years ago.

I just had to know how the story all began. These books are so addictive. Each person involved either is one of God's children or becomes part of His family. These stories reflect the faith that grew through horrendous hardships. But love from the Father and each other kept them going and growing.
Priscilla Marsh4 Stars Out Of 5March 27, 2008Priscilla MarshI enjoyed the continuing story of Ingeborg and her extended family. So nice not to have to worry about profanity or "steamy" scenes. i have bought and thrown away books of this type. I do think the stories could have been continued in the same book to save the reader added cost.
