can't wait to use it!
April 7, 2014
Next year is my first solo homeschooling. (After several years of cyber school.) Science was an especially hard choice for me because my husband and I are from different spiritual perspectives, so I needed something not offensive to my Christian beliefs but also not "Christian" in perspective. This was one of only a couple options fitting that bill. I am so glad I went with this book. Though I haven't used it yet, I have paged through the entire book and just can't wait to teach it to my 3 boys (gds. 1,2, and 4). I'm confident it will challenge my oldest without leaving my little guys in the dust. And I feel like the author was thinking of a mom like me when she designed the labs. Most take place in the kitchen and involve common household items and foods. I think this will also help the kids to see that "chemistry" is not some super-sciency stuff for grown ups, but rather it's everywhere, in everything. My one recommendation would be to get the student pages. The book is not spiral bound or perforated and I could see making copies being a little difficult. This also makes the manual itself non-consumable which is great because I want to pass it on to a homeschooling friend after I use it.
REAL Science is Phenomenal... simply phenomenal! It does a supurb job of making difficult concepts understandable and their hands on, applied learning approach makes those concepts stick in the brain! My 4th grader is having a ball, and best of all I'm relearning right along with her. The book provides scripted lessons (should you choose to use them) and a listing of great books that will enhance the learning experience. If you are looking for a curriculum with a biblical approach to chemistry, then you should probably look elsewhere. However, this curriculum shows through and through, in a way that is appropriate for 3rd-7th graders, that the heavens (and atoms too) declare the glory of God! Note: The book is quite thick which can make it difficlut to copy pages. I recommend that you spend a couple of bucks, go to a local copy shop and have the book cut and drilled to place in a binder. SOOOO worth it!
