Packed full of serious science and loads of fun, RSO is an incremental program that incorporates mathematics, scientific method, and science terminology as it gently builds on itself. Each topic in the RSO series of books is presented in an entertaining story-like format and is followed by hands-on activities along with background science information, parent instructions, labs, reading lists, journaling ideas, and websites. Comprehensive in scope, this full science curriculum incorporates notebooking with lab experiments and review.
RSO level one infuses scientific method and age-appropriate mathematics in every course. Students learn how to speculate, hypothesize, experiment, and conclude, while observation skills are developed through sketch drawings and written descriptions. Analytical skills are encouraged through comparing, forming questions, and interpretations. Students will make age-appropriate calculations, plot results, make graphs, and diagram information, just like R.E.A.L. scientists!
REAL Life Chemistry covers atoms, the periodic table, elements, molecules, matter, chemical reactions, genetics, and more. Instructor sheets are included with supply lists, procedure instructions, and "read-aloud" instruction/mini-lesson. Students then receive a story-lesson that presents science vocabulary in context, and is followed by 1-4 hands-on lab activities that often include charts, questions, or room to record findings, observations, and discussions.
Each book of RSO level one is a complete one-year science curriculum if used one or two times a week. Level 1 is appropriate for Grades 2-5. 430 pages, softcover. Revised edition.

(After several years of cyber school.) Science was an especially hard choice for me because my husband and I are from different spiritual perspectives, so I needed something not offensive to my Christian beliefs but also not "Christian" in perspective. This was one of only a couple options fitting that bill. I am so glad I went with this book. Though I haven't used it yet, I have paged through the entire book and just can't wait to teach it to my 3 boys (gds. 1,2, and 4). I'm confident it will challenge my oldest without leaving my little guys in the dust. And I feel like the author was thinking of a mom like me when she designed the labs. Most take place in the kitchen and involve common household items and foods. I think this will also help the kids to see that "chemistry" is not some super-sciency stuff for grown ups, but rather it's everywhere, in everything. My one recommendation would be to get the student pages. The book is not spiral bound or perforated and I could see making copies being a little difficult. This also makes the manual itself non-consumable which is great because I want to pass it on to a homeschooling friend after I use it.

REALLY amazing!November 6, 2012Oracle Triple CTucson, AZAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5REAL Science is Phenomenal... simply phenomenal! It does a supurb job of making difficult concepts understandable and their hands on, applied learning approach makes those concepts stick in the brain! My 4th grader is having a ball, and best of all I'm relearning right along with her. The book provides scripted lessons (should you choose to use them) and a listing of great books that will enhance the learning experience. If you are looking for a curriculum with a biblical approach to chemistry, then you should probably look elsewhere. However, this curriculum shows through and through, in a way that is appropriate for 3rd-7th graders, that the heavens (and atoms too) declare the glory of God! Note: The book is quite thick which can make it difficlut to copy pages. I recommend that you spend a couple of bucks, go to a local copy shop and have the book cut and drilled to place in a binder. SOOOO worth it!
